Queer Lala Times / Ku la shi bao. Vol. 1

n.p.: Huaren Lala Lianmeng / Chinese Lala Alliance, 2014. 172p., very good in wraps with slight shelfwear, text almost entirely in Chinese with an introduction in English. Text is in the simplified characters used on the Mainland. From the introductory statement: "We are Lala (LBT); we are not dissoluble under the umbrellas of 'women,' 'gay,' 'homosexuality.' We are queer; we are not content with the binarism of gay/straight, men/women, normal/pervert. We seek diverse narratives that speak to the complexity of the world, and we seek a more diverse reality. We are activists; with many others, we are committed to the gender/sexuality identity activism in China. The experience of changing convinces us that a change in mind is the ultimate pursuit in activism..." Articles on queer theory, history, and the status of the movement and particular difficulties faced in Chinese society. This is a hard copy, purchased in Hong Kong and perhaps printed there, of the publication that circulates in Mainland China primarily by electronic means.

The Hong Kong Letters A Travel Memoir by ShaddicK, Gill

North Melbourne: Arcadia. 2019. MINT - a NEW copy. Illustrated with Black and White Photographs. 234 pages In this spirited memoir, Gill Shaddick recreates a Hong Kong of the late 1960s. A weekend sail goes awry when a yacht with her on board strays into the waters of Communist China. A full-scale sea and air search mounted from Hong Kong can find no trace. Yet Gill is very much alive. With her friends, she is reciting from Mao’s Little Red Book with no idea what fate awaits her or how long she will be held. The Hong Kong Letters is part memoir, part travelogue. Gill introduces us to characters that fiction couldn’t have invented any better and transports the reader to another time and place, a reminder that anyone can fit the experiences of a lifetime into two short years. . New. 1st Edition. Trade Paperback.
