Bookplate of Bibliotheca Collegii Regulis apud Windesoram (Nova Scotia) with Withdrawn stamp. In back is a blank "Date Due" slip, indicating it was never circulated. Purchased in a lot from Sisters of Charity. A beautiful little volume of 87 pp. The author was born Julius Sophus Felix Dahn, eldest son of Friedrich and Constanze Dahn, actors in Hamburg's city theatre. A right-wing professor of law in several universities with several important publications to his credit, he was elected rector of the university at Breslau, where he died shortly before his 78th birthday, in 1889.. .     Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, 1892 Original fine maroon cloth wth intricate gilt decoration and colour seaside pictorial pastedown on boards. Date taken from author's facsimile signature, but no publishing date given. Internet states Preface is same as first edition of 1850. The artist, Darley, was so well-respected for his detailed drawings that he was commissioned to illlustrate banknotes, in order to discoourage counterfeiters. A very popular book in its early days. After Mitchell's copyright expired in 1893, several unauthorized versions appeared. This is probably one of them. Altemus makes beautiful books !     The Forest Giant; The Romance of a Tree by LeCorbeau, Adrien

    New York and London: Harper and Brothers, 1924 Original brown quarter-cloth on beige pictorial boards with red lettering. Highly-embellished translation by T.E. Lawrence ( as L.H. Ross) of what was said to be a rather pedestrian French original. Lawrence had been booted out of the RAF, and had re-enlisted in the Tank Corps. With little to occupy his superior mind, he solicited Publisher Jonathan Cape for assignments in translation. While completing final arrangements to give Lawrence Mardrus' Arabian Nights for translation, Cape give him Le Gigantesque by Le Corbeau, the life story of a Sequoia tree, with determinism as the underlying theme. Completed in about three months, it proved to be the only translation from French that he completed. By December he was involved with The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, which occupied him for three years.
