Description:
Dublin: No Publisher, 1880. [2]p with conjugate blank, manuscript letter from J.[ohn] Bernard Burke, to a Captain White. Dated (in another hand) 14th or 4th January, 1880, Burke writes that "'The Visitation of Seats and Arms' has been out of print many a long year; and it is well nigh impossible to come across a perfect set. Several copies were destroyed in a fire at the Printers. It is just possible I may find a set in the hands of a friend who does not appreciate it as you would, and if this hope be not delusive it will be a great pleasure to me to present it to you. By the way, have ?Stanisons sent you my new edition of 'The Peerage'? I told them to do so. Every kind wish of the New Year, Yours most sincerely, J. Bernard Burke". Burke (1814-1892), was the son of John Burke (of 'Burke's Peerage' fame), he was appointed Ulster King of Arms in 1853, knighted in 1854 and appointed Keeper of the State Papers of Ireland in 1855. First Edition. Unbound. Good. 8vo. Letter.

London: No Publisher, 1840. [4]p, with the last page being the integral address panel, each page approximately 180mm x 225mm in size. Lightly soiled, creases from old folds, remnants of wax seal to final page, with address panel and date stamp, but lacking postage stamp. Fitzalan writing to his architect Robert Abraham on December 12th, 1840, noting the presence of bugs in his house in Gloucester Place, "which of itself is enough to stop proceedings there, so that I think we must make up our minds to remain where we are this year and look about for next. We are very much obliged to you for the trouble you have taken for us; but remember, you must let me have an account of what you have done, as your time is much too valuable to be wasted". The remainder of the letter asks Abraham if he could find a John Overington a job. Lord Fitzalan, possibly ?Henry Granville Fitzalan-Howard, 14th Duke of Norfolk, see ODNB; Robert Abraham, architect, (1773-1850), see ODNB. First Edition. Unbound. Fair.… Read More

Alnwick: W. Davison, 1809. Single sided printed handbill, approximately 190mm x 150mm in size. Browned, slightly chipped to left hand side with small amounts of loss, with ink number and print run to head and ink initial to the left of the imprint. Dated February 18, 1809, noting that the time for the hiring of 'hinds' has been put back a month so "it is requested, therefore, that the Gentlemen and Farmers in this Neighbourhood will defer Hiring such Servants accordingly". A 'hind', (the term is probably from Scotland though clearly also used, as here, in Northern England), was "applied to a married skilled farm worker who occupies a cottage on the farm and is granted certain perquisites in addition to wages" (Dictionary of the Scots Language). The printer was W.[illiam] Davison of Alnwick (fl.1802-1858), described in the BBTI as a printer, engraver/etcher, bookseller, stationer, publisher, bookbinder, librarian/owner of circulating library, stereotyper/stereotype… Read More

No Place: No Publisher Printed single sided broadside, approximately 380mm x 465mm in size, n.d. but probably 1794. Slightly creased, small scuff to head with small amount of loss, otherwise quite bright and clean. "Thomas Grimston, of Kilnwick and Grimston, offered to raise a cavalry force in Holderness and he set about his task with characteristic thoroughness. He issued the articles of enrolment, based on those of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry, and then travelled round the Holderness villages explaining his plans to the farmers. The response was very poor, and he followed up his visits with letters to the Clergy suggesting that parish meetings be called so that the importance and purpose of the proposed corps could be explained to all the parishioners. Once more the results were disappointing. A letter received from the Vicar of Sproatley partly explains why this was so. "The sentiments of the People here are not changed, I apprehend, since you conversed with them. What they object to is… Read More

Allan & Ferguson Single sided engraved ticket, approximately 90mm x 60mm in size, n.p. but probably Glasgow, n.d. c.1841? Lightly browned, slightly rubbed with some loss to imprint, minor soiling, light glue stains to corners of reverse, printers name is indistinct but appears to be Allan & Ferguson. A ticket for 'front seats' in the Assembly Rooms, Glasgow, which were designed by the brothers Robert and James Adam, and aimed to provide the city with a meeting place for dancing, music, reading and other cultural pursuits. The Library contained upwards of two thousand volumes, in every department of literature and science, from which every purchaser of a lecture ticket was entitled to read for twelve months. R.B. Hardy is advertised in 'The Phrenological Magazine' as giving a lecture on the "genius and character of Burns" at the Anderston Popular Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1841, so it is possible that this was another lecture on the same… Read More

Castalla [Spain]: No Publisher, 1813. Single sided printed broadside, approximately 220mm x 315mm in size. Slightly creased, faint pencil line through top left hand corner of text, couple of tiny chips, undeciphered note in ink to reverse, but generally fairly clean. Desertion during the Peninsula Wars was a serious problem, Linch in his 'Desertion from the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars' finds that "between 1803 and 1815 there were 77,696 cases of desertion", though "desertion from British corps primarily occurred in the British Isles". A rough translation follows. "Notice. Attentive to some soldiers dependent on the army of S.M.B. that I have the honor of commanding in chief, they desert their flags, and may forget their duty to such an extent, that they prefer to go to the host of the common enemy, rather than bolver to meet those of their legitimate Sovereign; Therefore, all Spanish citizens and civilians who love their homeland and national liberty are… Read More

London: J. Pitts Single sided printed broadside, approximately 245mm x 365mm in size, n.d. but c.1820. Slightly chipped and creased to edges, lightly browned, a couple of small spots, but generally quite clean. Double column, with attractive border. Relates the dream of a seaman called James Covey, who, two weeks before the battle of Camperdown with the Dutch fleet, had dreamed that he had both of his legs blown off. During the engagement, he did indeed lose both of his legs. The text is signed John Griffin, who was pastor at the Tabernacle in Orange Street, near Southsea Common, which had opened in 1754, and who was the author of several books and pamphlets. Pitts was at this address in 1820 and 1821. Showing at Hull only in Library Hub, but the R.T.S. seemingly issued the story in a 8pp pamphlet around the same time, so I'm not sure which came first.
