Later (late-eighteenth century) full-calf, raised bands, spines in six panels, contrasting title / volume labels to second and third panels, volute corner pieces and central lozenge shaped tool to remaining panels, gilt flower head frame to covers, all edges marbled with blue paste endpapers. Author label to volume two chipped with loss, slightly chipped to head of spines, covers slightly scuffed, joints split with small amount of loss, but holding well on cords. Internally lightly browned, with slightly heavier browning to edges. Previous owner's name to first page of text in each volume. Engraved titles. Variorum edition of Barclay's Argenis, with a sequel to Argenis by Gabriel Bugnot (pub. 1669). Brunet I:652. Latin text. First Thus. Full Calf. Good. 8vo.

London: Bensley, 1813. 270pp, thirty-seven hand coloured plates, [12]. Slightly later half-vellum and marbled paper over boards, smooth back, leather title label to spine, t.e.g. Vellum rubbed, especially to spine and front cover, small split to upper joint at head with a tiny split to lower joint at head but holding well, rubbed to extremities, board edges lightly bumped, light scratching to marbled paper covering boards with small amount of loss. Internally lightly browned, one or two spots of foxing, but generally quite clean and bright. Gift inscription to ffep to an Arthur Pomeroy from a Dr Steele. The attractive hand-coloured plates to rear, binding is by F. Cavenagh of Dublin (See Ramsden, page 230, though spelled differently and at a slightly different address, almost certainly the same binder). Moss II:724 (quoting a review from the Monthly Review). Full contemporary vellum, morocco title label to spine, with small label to foot of spine. Title label a little rubbed, vellum slightly grubby, internally the text is lightly browned but generally quite clean. Additional engraved title, title in red and black. A reprint of the first Graevii edition (1688), but with all the important notes. Dibdin notes (of the earlier Graevii edition) that "these editions, containing all the variorum notes and those of Graevius, are much superior ... Graevius ... corrected the errors of Bongarsius, and formed the text of Justin by sober critical rules. The four last editions are preferable, as they contain the notes of Faber, Vorstius and Scheffer" (Dibdin 4th ed. page 139). The notes mentioned above are all included in this variorum edition. Birminghamiae [Birmingham]: Joannis Baskerville, 1773. [5], 2-317pp, [1]. Contemporary full straight grain morocco, raised bands, spine in six panels, author lettered directly to second panel with a small number of fleuron tools to foot, covers with single line border, single line to edges and inner edges, a.e.g., shell patterned marbled endpapers. Rubbed to outer joints and extremities, corners lightly bumped. Some light browning and occasional light foxing internally, but generally fairly bright and clean. Moss regarded this as "one of the most beautiful of Baskerville's editions, and by far, the most elegant one we have of this historian" (Moss, 'Manual of Classical Bibliography', Volume II, page 561). Though admired by contemporaries, his poetry is not generally well regarded. Gibbon for example proclaimed that 'the poetical fame of Ausonius condemns the taste of his age', but his works have retained interest for other reasons, including references to wine making (he was a native of Bordeaux) and the use of a water mill to cut marble (Wikipedia).… Read More
