Lightly soiled, creases from old folds, remnants of wax seal to final page, with address panel and date stamp, but lacking postage stamp. Fitzalan writing to his architect Robert Abraham on December 12th, 1840, noting the presence of bugs in his house in Gloucester Place, "which of itself is enough to stop proceedings there, so that I think we must make up our minds to remain where we are this year and look about for next. We are very much obliged to you for the trouble you have taken for us; but remember, you must let me have an account of what you have done, as your time is much too valuable to be wasted". Glasgow: Allan & Ferguson Single sided lithographic ticket, approximately 150mm x 115mm in size, n.d. c.1844? Light surface soiling, small ink stain to reverse, corners of reverse lightly stained with glue, otherwise fairly clean. Sir David Wilkie (see McEwan's Dictionary of Scottish Art & Architecture, pages 605-6 and ODNB), died in 1841, however the dates on the card don't work, if the Thursday was the 3rd, then the Saturday should be the 19th not the 18th, both 1844 and 1850 would work with the dates on the invitation and the dates of the Finlays being located at 49 Buchanan Street (between 1832 and 1854 according the the National Portrait Gallery), it is presumably more likely to have been held closer to the date of Wilkie's death. Glasgow: Allan & Ferguson Single sided lithographic ticket, approximately 125mm x 90mm in size, n.d. c.1850? Very minor soiling, corners of reverse lightly glue stained, but generally quite bright. There are several James Millers in McEwan's 'Dictionary of Scottish Art & Architecture', but only one seems to work with the probable date of the card, but he is known as a portrait painter rather than still life. Described as fl. 1853, the SNPG has 'The Duke of Wellington' on a panel (McEwan, pg 404). He is offered as the best option with very little confidence. London: Sherwood, Neely and Jones, 1816. [6] vii-xxxii, [1] 2-412pp, [4]. Original boards, later rebacked with a new title label. Boards worn and (suitably) flecked with paint. Internally lightly water stained to margins, especially bottom margin, but not too obtrusive. P5 and P6 with closed tears catching text but with no loss. Slightly later ownership inscription of Geo. Cossham? to front pastedown, book label of Peter Stewart Young to front pastedown, and with a manuscript recipe for making an 'excellent azure' to ffep, and others rear free endpaper. With two plates (one folding) and a folding table as called for. First published in English in 1804, a translation of Pierre Francois Tingry's 'Traité Théorique et Pratique sur l'Art de Faire et d'Appliquer les Vernis', there was a third edition published in 1832. Rubbed to extremities, corners and edges bumped and worn, light white marks to top left corner of lower cover. Previous owners name to head of title, very slightly browned, otherwise fairly bright and clean. With five plates (one line engraving, two lithographs and three aquatints), two of which are folding. The more uncommon first edition, there was a second edition published in 1823. Prideaux notes that Nicholson (1753-1844) was one of the founders of the Old Water-Colour Society, and that he "settled down as a landscape draughtsman, finding a ready market for his very numerous works, and, later on, attaining to the distinction of having his drawings fraudulently copied ... Internally some minor browning, tear to bottom margin of N4 in volume one, otherwise generally fairly bright and clean. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Reynolds by Caroline Watson to volume one.
