Tall hardcover, illustrated boards show only minor toning and minor edge and corner bumping/wear. The biggest issue with the exterior is the clear laminate is lifting in a few spots, mainly on the spine and around the hinge areas. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues. Pages are clean and show little use. Decorated end pages in front and rear are free of any handwriting or bookplates, no signatures, no library markings, no scribbling etc. First US edition thus with the copyright page showing the only Golden Press date of 1960 and the UK date of 1953. Publishers address shows the two digit pre-ZIP Code and the front board contains the proper number of 372:195 in the upper right corner.

The underside of the jacket was neatly reinforced with masking tape along the top and bottom edges and over the decades the tape is darkened with age. Three ads in front with nine pages of publisher ads in rear. Large foldout map attached as frontis. Map has about a 1" tear where it attaches at the top. No repairs or marks on map. Only handwriting found in book is a "ML #7" written in pencil on front pastedown, which can easily be eased, and on the ffep there was a price written in pencil long ago in the upper right corner which has been erased but here are still shadows of the numbers present. Binder's logo stamp on rear pastedown in corner. Spotting present on spine where a label is still partially present and there is both a white and a black spot on the front board. Small blowout at top edge of spine as well. See photos. Preface is dated November 24, 1859 and is entitled "Preface of the Ninth Edition".

Boards are clean and corners show only the faintest of bumping. No handwriting or bookplates, binding good. 423 pages plus ads, ad pages uncut. Only flaw in book is on front end page where a tan rectangle shadows a page where a scrap of paper once set. Upper right corner of the same page has residue from where 1/2 inch price sticker one was. The issue with the front end page (as pictured) is the only issue that keeps is out of a fine grading. Book condition graded as near fine. See photos.
