anticat16. [np/nd: 1930s?]. Printed photographically on heavy textured paper, measuring 5.5 x 8.25 inches. These are copies of earlier etchings and engravings, many look to be originally from the 18th & early 19 century. Condition is generally fine, a couple have dark coffee stains at margins. Subjects range from quite explicit to merely suggestive.

ALS in pen on the recto of a bifolium, to an unknown recipient. Written from Little Warwick Street; the date is Dec 21, 1782. Conway suggests that regiments heading for Jamaica should "if possible touch at Barbados". He expresses concern about the accommodation of troops, mentioning the Carolina Garrison. Signed: "H.S. Conway". Titled on the verso of the second leaf: "Dec 21, 1782 / Genl. Conway". Old stains and discoloration, quite severe, several horizontal folds, but intact. Conway had held the post of Commander-In-Chief of the Forces since March of 1782; he would be promoted to Field Marshall in October of 1793.

A little wear to the tips and the base of the spine, moderate foxing and some discoloration to some of the plates, a very good copy. This is a bind-up of twelve plays, each with its own title page and a frontispiece by Pierce Egan (one play has an additional plate as well). Contributors include James Sheridan Knowles, J.R. Planche, J.S. Coyne, Benjamin Webster, Edward Fitz-Ball, Charles Dance, John Maddison Morton, George Blink, and R.B. Peake. This copy has been rebacked using the original printed boards, backed with a roughly-cut leather strip on the spine, the signatures neatly strengthened at the gutters with blue-gray paper tape. Some large chips from the leather at the upper spine, printed boards rubbed and quite worn at corners; in general a sound, complete, very good copy. Ownership signature on the upper title dated 1869. Author's signature and "No. 8" in holograph at the head of the first music page (Pg. 11). Paris: Delalaine, 1790. . 12mo. Green half-calf & marbled boards, covers ruled in gilt, spine designed and lettered in gilt. Marbled end papers. Engraved title leaf. 330 pages, plus one leaf of addenda/corrections at rear. Contemporary patterned wrappers are bound in. Some damage to the last couple of leaves, at the gutter, with very slight loss; binding rubbed at joints and tips; in general, a clean very good copy. Chateaubriand contributes a poem at page 205: L'Amour de la Campage [ as M. le Chevalier de C*** ]. Pages 303 - 330 contain detailed ads for poetry and other works, entitled: Notice de Tous les Ouvrages de Poesie Qui Ont Paru en 1789. A charming French poetry almanack, the text entirely in French.

anticat16. Washington: William Greer, 1828. 560 pages. Volume 1, Numbers 1 - 4. All four numbers of this journal bound into a single volume. Contemporary boards, corners quite worn, rebacked with a brown cloth spine and new end papers sometime in the late 20th century, from the look of it. Complete with 39 plates printed on 38 sheets (one is a double), of which several are folding. Subjects include spinning and weaving. Some faint library stamps on the initial few and final leaves, quite heavily foxed in the early numbers, cleaner toward the rear of the volume. There are a few short tears in margins, pages are quite yellowed and brittle, generally a very good copy.

London: Virtue/NY: Virtue, Emmins, [1840]. This is four (of five) divisions of American Scenery; Division IV is lacking. In addition to being issued in parts, the work was issued in clothbound divisions containing part of the text, and 24 plates apiece. Binding is the original plum blind-stamped cloth, spines designed and lettered in gilt, both covers designed in gilt with an image of a native archer. Pale yellow coated end papers. Some mild chipping at the spine ends, some foxing to margins, but plates are clean. The first few leaves of Division I are loose. Divisions I and V contain the decorative title pages for the work; at the end of Division V are bound the preface, the printed title pages, the contents and lists of engravings, and two leaves of ads (which include an ad for American Scenery: "Now publishing, to be completed in Thirty Parts at One Shilling, or in Divisions, 7s. 6d., cloth gilt"). Large bookplate on inner front cover, ownership signature on front fly leaf, a little wear to cloth at lower front hinge, a clean very good copy. On the life and works of Herschel, the astronomer who discovered Uranus. He is also remembered as a composer, producing 24 symphonies as well as other music. François Arago was Secrétaire perpétuel de l’Académie des Sciences.

Quite chipped at edges, tape repair to spine, 1 x 2 inch piece cut from upper corner of second leaf, with some loss of text (perhaps 20 words on each side). Russel was involved in the Rye House Plot, a plan to ambush the king, and was executed in 1683.

Some chipping and short tears to edges, spine worn where removed from a binding, very good otherwise. This contains "An Act for the better Securing the Lawful Trade of His Majesties Subjects to and from the East-Indies; and for the more effectual Preventing all His Majesties Subjects Trading thither under Foreign Commissions."

Harrisburg: Lane S. Hart, 1881. . Black cloth, spine designed and lettered in gilt. Marbled page edges. Engraved pictorial title page, and six folding maps and plates. Upper front cover a bit marked, some wear and a white mark on the spine, a clean very good copy in general. Small name stamp on end paper and title page. The final 180 pages and the folding plates all relate to coal mining in Pennsylvania. Plates illustrate coke ovens, a coal washing machine, and a columnar section from a shaft; the others are detailed maps of coal mines.

London: Asher and Co., [1869]. . First edition. Disbound. [28]pp. Some wear to spine and remnants of binding, small embossed ownership stamp, very good. Heinemann responds to the 1868 pamphlet by Onno Klopp [Translated into English by Frederick L. Weinmann from the German original: Wer ist der wahre Erbfeind von Deutschland?].

Amsterdam: Schouten, 1743. . 4to. 956pp. plus index. Full armorial vellum. Extra engraved title; title page printed in red & black with a woodcut design. Folding map of Rome by Septimio Severo [Urbis Veteris. Romae delineatio]. Seven inserted plates (two folding). Slight external cracking of upper hinge, some rubbing of vellum, a very good copy. Originally published in 1583, a popular work on Roman life and antiquities which saw many editions. This 1743 edition was the last published.

Paris: Didot, 1792.. 8vo. 699pp. Old quarter-sheep & patterned boards, spine gilt. Engraved frontispiece & 16 plates, plus illustrations within the text. Chipping at head of spine, wear to joints and edges, rear hinge cracked but intact; a very good copy. First published in 1691, there are numerous editions throughout the 18th century.
