Quarter red leather over marbled boards. Leather scuffed, rubbed through at corners. Owner's signature dated 1850 on front free endpaper. Binding solid, minor foxing, else clean. Account of the British diplomatic mission, led by Harris, to establish relations with the ancient Christian kingdom of Shoa in the highlands of Ethiopia. They succeeded in negotiating a commercial treaty and also collected considerable scientific data during the journey. Harris was knighted for his services in 1844.

Light dust soiling, text block detached from wrappers, otherwise very good. A rare promotional booklet for Huileries du Congo Belge (HCB), a subsidiary of the British soap manufacturing company Lever Brothers. The French-language text describes the history of the company's involvement in the Belgian Congo, beginning in 1911 when it secured a concession from the Belgian government to construct factories and harvest palm trees (for their oil) within a 1.9 million acres of forest land.  One section describes the characteristics of the Elais or oil palm and explains how it is harvested ("It is a climb of 15 to 20 meters that would be frightening and very dangerous for a European. Publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and vignette of soldiers on front board. Former mercantile library copy, with bookplate on front pastedown and a few stamps. No external library markings. Corners lightly bumped, some chipping/short tears to cloth at spine ends. One of the folding maps is quite delicate and has numerous tears (partially mended on the verso with archival tape), with some minor loss. Vandeleur, a highly decorated officer in the Scots Guards, participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895, the Niger Expedition in 1897, and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. He was awarded a grant from the Royal Geographical Society for his valuable work surveying more than 2000 miles of territory in East Africa and the Niger district. Good. 4-3/4 x 7-1/4" sewn printed peach-colored wraps, pp. 38 plus an errata slip tipped in, the recto of the rear wrap with the membership form filled out in ink (see below). Covers moderately worn, with chips out at the sewing points on the spine, a few small chunks out of the rear wrap (no loss to text), and a horizontal tear across the rear wrap. As per the membership form, this was the property of Norman Hill Nesbitt, inducted into the "Forbearance" Lodge on June 8, 1892, as witnessed by the Lodge's Acting Secretary, one K.H.M(?) Stuart.
