Fine in a very good dust jacket. 36-year portrait retrospective of the late Mary Ellen Mark (1940-2015), who was named the previous year "Most Influential Woman Photographer" by AMERICAN PHOTO magazine. This copy was warmly inscribed to Johnny Fox and his wife at the time, Valeria Duarte, in the year of publication. Johnny Fox (1953-2017) was a celebrated American sword swallower, sleight-of-hand artist, and proprietor of the Freakatorium / El Museo Loco, the first dime museum to appear in New York since the closing of Hubert's Museum in 1969. Light rust marks near staples and light fading at wrappers' fold, else fine. Offprint from THE SMITHSONIAN REPORT FOR 1959, providing a brief history of the discovery and study of viruses and recent developments in the understanding of what a virus is, how viruses may be classified, genetic study, and virus diseases and recovery from them. The illustrations include schematic representations of virus activity, theoretical diagrams of DNA structures (including the recently-discovered double helix), and several examples of microscopic photography, including a color image of infected HeLa cells (the cell line developed from the cancer cells of Johns Hopkins cancer patient Henrietta Lacks in the early 1950s).

First American edition, after the French edition of the same year published by the Centre Georges Pompidou in conjunction with an exhibit at the Centre Beaubourg in Paris. The book features photographs from Rauchenberg's 1949-1965 and 1979-1980 periods and a 1981 interview with Alan Sayag at Captiva Island. Overall very good, all tissue guards present. The author, Henry Cory Rowley Becher (1817-1885), was an English-born Canadian attorney, based for most of his career in London, Ontario. The present work, mostly a diary of his travels to and within Mexico in February and March, 1878, with an extensive appendix, was his only book.
