Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 1972. New book, 40 pages, MAA002. In 1921, Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick Gerald Peake formed the Arab Legion as a police force in the former British protectorate of Transjordan. The Legion's main roles were to keep order among Transjordian tribes and safeguard the villagers from Bedouins. In subsequent years, under the leadership of Glubb Pasha, the Arab Legion was transformed into the best-trained of all Arab armies. This richly illustrated book examines the history of the Arab Legion, detailing the infantry, supporting arms and services, and air, sea, police and national guard forces. It also profiles leaders, like Pasha, who were influential in the evolution of this force. Contents: Chronology; Foreword; Al Jeish Al Arabi; The Leaders; The Infantry; The Royal Armoured Corps; Supporting Arms and Services; Air, Sea, Police, National Guard and Training; The Plates.. Soft Cover. As New. Illus. by Roffe, Michael. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2017. New book, 48 pages, MAA514. In October 1940 an Italian army some 200,000 strong invaded Greece across its largely undefended border with Albania. Although supported by Great Britain, at first by sea and in the air and later by landing British and ANZAC troops from North Africa, Greece bore the main brunt of the six-month war. Outclassed in materiel and outnumbered, LtGen Papagos's Greek army was so successful against the Italians in north-west Greece that, by 22 November 1940, it was advancing into Italian-held Albania. This would eventually force Hitler to send in German reinforcements to support his beleaguered Italian allies, delaying his invasion of the Soviet Union. Complete with contemporary photographs and full-colour uniform plates, this fascinating study explores the history, organization, and appearance of the armies of this oft forgotten conflict.. Soft Cover. As New. Illus. by Dennis, Peter. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall.

Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2011. New book, 48 pages, MAA465. In the English-speaking world, it is generally unknown that a volunteer Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) fought alongside the US Army in Italy from mid-1944 until the end of the war. This was in effect a light infantry division, consisting of three infantry regiments augmented with artillery and light armour. It was supported by a Brazilian Air Force contingent of a light reconnaissance squadron as well as a P-47 Thunderbolt-equipped fighter squadron. Although all weapons, uniform, kit and equipment were either American-supplied or American models, there were distinctive Brazilian adaptations to uniforms and other key pieces of kit. This is a seriously researched volume on a little-studied subject matter complete with a range of previously unpublished photographs and specially commissioned artwork plates. Contents: Introduction, Historical and political background, The pre-war Brazilian Army, Creation and organization of the FEB, Uniforms and…

Description:
Concord Publications, 2007. New book, CN6520, 52 pages, 140 photos, 4 full pages colour uniform illustrations. Much has been written about the major WWII antagonists such as Germany. However, one of the Third Reich's most ardent supporters, up until the time Mussolini was deposed from power, was Italy. Indeed, when Italy declared war on France and Great Britain on 10 June 1940, it had a formidable total of 73 divisions. This new book from Concord Publications addresses a glaring gap in terms of providing photographic coverage of the Italian infantryman. Written by Philip Jowett, the comprehensive introduction outlines the relative merits and weaknesses of the Italian Army as it launched into a new war on top of its protracted campaign in Ethiopia. It must be noted that his book exclusively covers the Italian Army in Europe, so North Africa is not included. Spurred on by Mussolini, the Italian Army's first foray into WWII was in the French Alps, followed by the invasion of Greece four months…

Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2013. New book, 48 pages, MAA486. In 1939 more than 140,000 New Zealanders enlisted to fight overseas during World War II. Of these, 104,000 served in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Initially thrown into the doomed campaign to halt the German blitzkrieg on Greece and Crete (1941), the division was rebuilt under the leadership of MajGen Sir Bernard Freyberg, and became the elite corps within Montgomerys Eighth Army in the desert. After playing a vital role in the victory at El Alamein (1942) the 'Kiwis' were the vanguard of the pursuit to Tunisia. In 1943-45 the division was heavily engaged in the Italian mountains, especially at Cassino (1944); it ended the war in Trieste. Meanwhile, a smaller NZ force supported US forces against the Japanese in the Solomons and New Guinea (1942-44). Fully illustrated with specially commissioned colour plates, this is the story of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Forces vital contribution to Allied victory in World…
