Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2016. New book, 48 pages, NVG241. At the outbreak of World War I Austria-Hungary had four modern light cruisers and twenty modern destroyers at their disposal, constructed in the early 20th century to defend their growing overseas interests. It was these fast light vessels, not the fleet's prized battleships, which saw most action during the war; from the bombardment of enemy batteries during the Montenegrin Campaign to their victory over the Allied fleet at the Battle of the Strait of Otranto in 1917. Using specially-commissioned artwork author Ryan Noppen examines the cruisers and destroyers that the Austro-Hungarian Empire had at their disposal during World War I. His study covers their design and development, with thrilling combat reports highlighting the way in which the strategies evolved throughout the Adriatic Campaign.. Soft Cover. As New. Illus. by Wright, Paul. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall.

Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2013. New book, 48 pages, NVG200. The launch of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 changed the face of naval warfare. The first half-dozen dreadnoughts were all improvements of the basic Dreadnought design, all carrying ten 12-inch guns. It was only in 1911, with the launch of HMS Neptune that the layout of this powerful armament was altered as a result of practical experience. Two more versions of the Neptune entered service later that same year. These nine improved dreadnoughts formed the core of the British High Seas Fleet. They would soon, however, be outclassed by a new breed of super dreadnoughts, the subject of the second volume in this two-part story. While these new battleships carried larger 13.5-inch guns, they proved less successful as all-round battleships than their more lightly-armed predecessors. One last 12-inch gun dreadnought entered service in 1914, when a seven turret battleship being built for the Turks was commandeered by the Royal Navy, and re-named HMS Agincourt. This New… Read More

Description:
Oxford, United Kingdom: Osprey Publishing Ltd, 2006. New book, 48 pages, NVG126. Early British battlecruisers were not a "failed design" as is so often claimed, but a very successful and revolutionary one that was critical to, and instrumental in, Britain winning the naval war of 1914-18. This book contains new information on these innovative ships, using previously untapped evidence from the wrecks of the sunken battlecruisers and detailed analysis of admiralty records to show why Admiral Fisher's famous battlecruiser concept was a revolution that drew together technological breakthroughs, global communications and intelligence gathering to create the first worldwide rapid-response task force. Contents: Introduction - Admiral Fisher and the Transformation of the Navy - Committee on Designs, 1904 - British Battlecruisers - Construction - Modifications - Battlecruisers at War - Conclusion - Select Bibliography - Colour Plate Commentary; Index. Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2010. New book, 48 pages, NVG164. In the build up to World War I, the German Imperial Navy underwnt a period of revolutionary change and rapid manufacture. While already possessed of a powerful navy, spearheaded by the Deutschland class battleships, the introduction of the Royal Navy's HSM Dreadnought - the first of the all-big-gun warships - sparked an arms race that saw Germany channel considerable resources into developing a rival to this new type of foe. The Nassau class and, shortly thereafter, the Helgoland class were the first of Germany's efforts. With more armour and firepower than their predecessors, these new larger designs would see much combat during the war, notably at Dogger Bank and Jutland. The story of these naval powerhouses is vividly brought to life with official drawings and documents, through design and development analysis, and operational accounts for all the ships of these pioneering classes.. Description:
Oxford, United Kingdom: Osprey Pub Co, 2007. New book, 48 pages, NVG124, 8 pages of colour illustrations, 40+ B&W photos and illustrations. The task of Germany’s new Große Kreuzer at the beginning of the 20th century was to form an independent reconnaissance division that was able to perform special tasks. With a speed superiority of at least 3 knots, they should also be capable of fighting in the line, and would thus require heavy armour and good defensive qualities. The battlecruisers that were built did indeed have a remarkable ability to withstand battle damage, as demonstrated by the Goeben, which suffered five mine hits on one occasion. This title details all the classes of German battlecruiser, with particular emphasis on each individual ship’s battle experience and deployment in conflict. Contents: Design Philosophy, Fiscal restraints, Technical Development, Service History, Battle Damage, Appendix, Bibliography.. Soft Cover. As New. Illus. by Bryan, Tony. 8vo - over… Read More

Description:
Ad Hoc Publications, 2006. New book, 320 pages, numerous photos, slight rubbing wear to cover. This book, originally published in 1919, is a record of the author's period of command of the Royal Navy's largest and most prestigious warships during the first two and a half years of the Great War. The Grand Fleet was created on the day war was declared, and was essentially the Home Fleet by another name, its purpose to establish and maintain a blockade against the German High Seas Fleet - and if the opportunity arose, bring it to battle and annihilate it - at the same time as acting as a deterrent to any notion the enemy might have had to invade the British Isles.. By the end of World War II, the US Navy was the undoubted global superpower, despite initial crippling losses to its battlefleet at Pearl Harbor. Richly illustrated with archive photographs as well as a full cutaway of the world's only surviving dreadnought, this comprehensive and detailed title covers the technical characteristics and combat record of the US dreadnoughts throughout their long careers..
