Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2011. New book, 64 pages, WAR155. This title explores the recruitment, training, and combat experiences of the famous ANZAC infantry in the opening years of World War I. Worried about the growing power of Japan and the German Far Eastern colonies, Australia and New Zealand had both introduced conscription in 1912. When war broke out in 1914, the men already in the system provided a small nucleus of trained soldiers, but at least half of those who went on to serve abroad had no previous military experience. Australians rushed to the colors even before their government had formally offered troops to Britain. Some initial training was undertaken in Australia, but most of the work had to be done when the AIF reached Egypt. Although the Anzacs were expecting to go on to France, little use was made of the experience of men who had already served on the Western Front. The decision to employ the Anzacs in the very different theatre of Gallipoli came as a complete surprise. The events at the… Read More

Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2001. New book, 48 pages, MAA356. Recent history should remind us that it was events in the Balkans which sparked off the Great War, with the assassination of the Austrian heir Prince Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, and the consequent invasion of Serbia by Austro-Hungarian armies on 2 August 1914. Nevertheless, the subsequent four-year war in that theatre is always overshadowed by the simultaneous campaigns on the Western Front. For the first time this book offers a concise account of these complex campaigns, the organisation, orders of battle, and the uniforms and insignia of the armies involved: Austro-Hungarian, German, Ottoman, Serbian, Montenegrin, Albanian, British, French, Italian, Russian, Bulgarian, Greek and Rumanian. . Soft Cover. As New. Illus. by Pavlovic, Darko. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description:
Osprey Pub Co, 2009. New book, 48 pages, MAA452. While small in numbers, the Belgian Army played a vital role in World War 1 that is often overlooked. Germany’s invasion of neutral Belgium, which led Britain to declare war in August 1914, should have been swift and fierce yet the unexpected heroic defence, against great odds, of Belgian fortresses, frustrated the German Schlieffen Plan for a thrust to Paris and a lightning victory. The plucky Belgian resistance proved successful in buying time for French and British troops to mobilize and report to the front, where the Belgians would then go on to fight, stubbornly defending the northern end of the Allied trench line for the rest of the war. Discover the story of this determined Army, from their organization and commanders, to their uniforms and equipment. The only main combatant army of World War I not previously covered by Osprey, this volume will be an important addition to any enthusiast’s collection, accompanied by detailed artwork and… Read More

Description:
University Park, Illinois, U.S.A.: Osprey Pub Co, 1996. New book, 64 pages, WAR016. World War 1 was a watershed in British military and social history, and even now the repercussions can still be felt. No town or village in the British Isles escaped casualty, and the creative genius of a generation was wiped out, at an incalculable loss to society. This book looks in detail at how the British soldier lived, fought and died during the traumatic war years. Enlistment, training and all aspects of life on active service are carefully examined, including discipline, relaxation and even the type and quality of food that soldiers ate. The analysis of the British infantryman's experience is greatly aided by the memories of old soldiers, which provide an interesting and often vivid account of life on the Western Front. Contents: Historical Background, Chronology, Enlistment, Training, Uniform and Equipment, Weapons, Active Service, Food, Relaxation and Leave, Discipline, Combat and Tactics, Casualties, On… Read More

Description:
Shire Books, 2010. New book, 128 pages. The fascination with the British involvement in the First World War extends to all aspects of the conflict. The battles and their outcomes; the armies and their leaders; the conditions of trench warfare; and the controversies form part of the growing literature examining every aspect of a war that was to cast a shadow over the rest of the twentieth century, the effects of which are still being felt today. For the British army, the cap badge is the most easily identifiable form of insignia. It represents a distillation of the pride of the regiment, its various battle honors and symbols borne proudly on the metallic emblem that was worn on all headdress, even within the trenches. Identification of the cap badge on old photographs is a first, important step in unraveling the military service of an individual. Cap badges have been collected avidly since they were first thought of in the nineteenth century. Cap-badge collecting is as popular now as it has ever been;… Read More

Oxford, United Kingdom: Osprey Pub Co, 2007. New book, 48 pages, MAA439. This book describes the organization, lists the units and illustrates the uniforms and equipment of the four Canadian divisions which earned an elite reputation on the Western Front in 1915-18. Canada's 600,000 troops - of whom more than 66,000 died and nearly 150,000 were wounded - represented an extraordinary contribution to the British Empire's struggle. On grim battlefields from the Ypres Salient to the Somme, and from their stunning victory at Vimy Ridge to the final triumphant 'Hundred Days' advance of autumn 1918, Canada's soldiers proved themselves to be a remarkable army in their own right, founding a national tradition. Contents: Introduction; Formation of Canadian Expeditionary Force; Canadians in the trenches: first gas attacks, April 1915 - formation of Canadian Corps - outstanding tactical skill of Gen Arthur Currie - growing combat experience - Vimy Ridge, 1917, and its great significance to… Read More

Uniformology, 2008. ** FREE POSTAGE within Australia, postage overseas at cost -- Note: Postage will be added automatically when you place an order, but I will adjust the postage cost when the order is processed. ** By the middle of the Great War, the German High Command was still convinced they were going to be victorious. Plans were therefore made to update the Parade uniforms of the army and the new Parade Uniform regulations were issued in 1915. Essentially, the old uniform details such as facings, pipings and lace remained the same as before the war, except that the basic color of the uniform was Field Grey for all branches. History was not kind to these plans. As the war deepened it became apparent that new dress uniforms would be a matter decided at the end of the war. Consequently few of these uniforms were ever issued and then mostly to officers. Other ranks could purchase them for walking out and many did but by War’s end the issue of uniforms, dress or otherwise, would be largely… Read More
