The Hanseatic League was a commercial and defensive federation of merchant guilds based in harbour towns along the North Sea and Baltic coasts of what are now Germany and her neighbours, which eventually dominated maritime trade in Northern Europe and spread its influence much further afield. The League was formed to protect the economic and political interests of member cities throughout a vast and complex trading network. The League continued to operate well into the 17th century, but its golden age was between c.1200 and c.1500; thereafter it failed to take full advantage of the wave of maritime exploration to the west, south and east of Europe. Kings were recognised as guardians of order, but this had its limitations. Lords expected to use force to secure their rights or win an argument when peaceful methods were not sufficient. The news surprised all the lords of the Western world and in particular William, Duke of Normandy: the kingdom came down to him. He immediately prepared an impressive military expedition and, on 28 September, he landed on the English coast near Hastings For the second edition of the reconstruction of this battle, the organisers managed to gather together 2000 'reconstitutioners' wearing XI Century costumes. According to the official statistics there are 132 bowmen, 91 horsemen and 1,279 foot soldiers, more than 1,500 combatants in all.
