This is a first edition of An Anthology of Modern Irish Poetry, edited by the American academic Wes Davis. It is a comprehensive representation of Irish poetic achievement in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from poets such as Austin Clarke and Samuel Beckett, to those who came of age in the turbulent '60s, including Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley; to a new generation of Irish writers such as David Wheatley and Sinéad Morrissey. Each poet is represented by a generous number of poems--there are 800 poems; the table of contents is 27 pages. There are Nobel Prize winners, relative unknowns, by those working in English and Gaelic (translated). There is a historical overview, lots of notes and a short essay on each poet.

There is a crease in the table of contents pages, which appears to be a printing issue.
But there is no evidence that the book has been read. It's in perfect condition.

This is an unread first edition of Baudelaire, written by the English journalist Joanna Richardson and published in 1990.
It is a full biography of the French poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), which was a best-seller and very well received by critics.
It's a big book with few photos.
It is mylar-wrapped--you can remove it if you like. The spots you see on the cover are from the price tag. No one has ever read this book, or even opened it. It is in mint condition.

This is a luxury edition of The Canterbury Tales, published in the UK in 1986. This book, written in the late 1400s, remains a best-seller; only the Bible has sold more copies.
It is fully illustrated with medieval illuminations and woodcuts.
288 pages, packed with images, 90% in color. It's quite heavy.
This copy has not been read, although it was opened to the center page.
The spine of the dust jacket only is faded to a lighter color.
Other than that, it is in pristine condition. Beautiful book.

This is a stated first edition (1978) of A Captive of Time: My Years With Pasternak. It is the memoirs of the Russian poet Olga Ivinskaya (1912-1995), who was Boris Pasternak's mistress and the woman upon whom 'Lara' is based, in Pasternak's Dr. Zhivago.

This book is in good condition. Edited, with a Glossary, by W.J. Craig, M.A., Trinity College, Dublin. Including the Glossary, it is 1264 pages.
It needs some TLC; the spine has loosened a little and there are some marks on the covers to be removed.
The cover is dark red with a nice stamped design on the front and back. On the front cover, the word 'Shakespeare' appears in gold. On the spine, it says, in gold, 'The Works of Shakespeare'. There is a small ink mark on the cover. On the back cover, there are 4 small white dots that look almost like bleach. The pages have darkened. There is shelf wear to the spine, and at the top of the spine, there is a 1/4" tear.On the inside front cover page, there is an inscription: 'To Bert, Wishing him many happy returns of the day. From John, 25/1/11'. There is a full-page black and white portrait of Shakespeare across from the title page.

This is a very nice copy, published in 1961, of Edgar Allan Poe Stories: Twenty-Seven Thrilling Tales by the Master of Suspense, with an Added Selection of His Best Poems.

As you can see, there is quite a bit of wear to the dust jacket, which is unclipped.
The book itself is perfect. It does not appear to have been read.

This is a 'best of' collection, Essays, Poems and Addresses, published by Walter J Black for the Classics Club in 1969.
It is beige tweed boards with red and brilliant gold on the cover and spine; the top pages are dyed red.
There is a bookplate on the inside front cover, but it has already started to come off on its own and you can remove it (there are how-to videos online; it's really easy).
Unread and pristine. The dark mark you see in the cover image is my shadow.

This is a first edition of English Romantic Writers, an anthology produced in 1967 by David Perkins, Professor of English and American Literature, Emeritus, at Harvard University.
It is selected works of English Romantic writers, each with a biographical sketch and a critical analysis of his work. It covers the years 1798 to 1832; it begins with William Blake and ends with Thomas Lovell Beddoes. It's mostly poetry and letters, but it also contains essays and some prose.
I attach photos of some of the contents--the table of contents is 20 pages.
It is 1265 pages on superfine paper. It includes a few illustrations.
As you can see, there is a coffee spill to the side of the book--most did not into the book. Some of the liquid did make it inside, but not until page 1125.
There are a couple of scratches to the cover, and shelfwear to the edges.
Otherwise excellent condition.

This is a first edition (1989) of Erotic Works of D.H. Lawrence, Illustrated in Color with the Erotic Paintings of D.H. Lawrence. It includes novels, novellas, short stories, essays and poetry -- see contents photos. D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) is known as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. He was prolific, but is most famous for his novels and controversial writings on erotica, particularly Lady Chatterley's Lover, which was published in Italy and France in the '20s, but not in the UK and US until 1959. Lawrence was also a painter and held a show of his works in London in 1929. The public outrage was so great, the police shut down the exhibit. Those paintings, and his erotic writing are included in this book. It's a thick, heavy book--8" x 9 1/2" and 568 pages. This copy has not been read, or even opened--it still creaks.Aside from some shelf-scuffing to the back of the dust jacket, it is in mint condition.

This is a stated First Edition, and first printing, of Good Intentions, a 128-poem collection by the American poet Ogden Nash (1902-1971).

This is a leather-bound mint-condition copy of Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales, published in 2011.
It is the 201 fairy tales and 10 legends written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the German academics and folklore collectors who, from 1812 to 1857, published the world's most famous fairy tales.
Bound in burgundy leather with an inlaid foil design. Bound-in silk bookmark, gold-trimmed pages.
652 pages, with no adornment, other than one portrait of the brothers.
This book is brand new and has not been read; I don't think it's ever been opened. Its flawless--pristine.

This is an unread First US Edition of I Saw Esau: The Schoolchild's Pocket Book, written by the English folklore experts Iona and Peter Opie. It was originally published in 1947. In 1992, it was re-published, this time full of color illustrations by the great American illustrator Maurice Sendak, best known for Where the Wild Things Are, and his many cartoons for the New Yorker.
Collected in this invaluable book are the wit and wisdom of generations of schoolchildren—more than one 170 rhymes ranging from insults and riddles to tongue twisters, jeers and jump-rope rhymes. This copy's dust jacket, though unclipped, is a little battered. The book itself is perfect. The spine has not been cracked; there is no indication that anyone ever opened it.

This is a first edition from the classics series published by International Collectors Library in 1970. John Brown's Body (1928) is an epic poem written by the American poet Stephen Vincent Benét (1898-1943). Its title references the radical abolitionist John Brown, who raided Harpers Ferry in Virginia in the fall of 1859. He was captured and hanged later that year. Benét's poem covers the history of the American Civil War until Lee's surrender at Appomattox. There are eight fictional characters that comprise north and south, soldier and non-soldier, men and women, white and black, slave and freemen. They are introduced to round out the story of the Civil War and the actual events and leaders. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1929.
This is a lovely copy. Red leatherette, with a gilt design on the cover and spine and a bound-in silk bookmark, which remains undisturbed.

This is a pristine copy of The Jungle Books, Volume II, the classic stories of animals in India written in 1894 by Rudyard Kipling.
This is the 1948 edition published by Doubleday and illustrated by Aldren Watson. This is a beautiful copy.
It is 7 stories, plus poems, with 6 color illustrations and several black and white illustrations.
201 pages, all clean and clear. The binding is perfect and it has been wrapped in mylar.
It has two flaws. The bottom corner of page 137 was accidentally folded in a little. The other is a printing error--a tiny ink blur on the corner of the cover (see photo). Other than that, it is perfect. There is no evidence that anyone ever read it; it's pristine.

This is a pristine copy of Just So Stories for Little Children, Rudyard Kipling's classic collection of children's stories, all involving animals, first published in 1902.
Kipling illustrated the stories himself. This is the Folio Society's edition, which features all of his original illustrations.
The Folio Society first published this book in 1991; this is its 10th printing, dated 2005. As you would expect from the Folio Society, it is a beautiful book.
There is talcum powder on the back cover; I've removed most of it. Other than that, it's in mint condition.

Beginning in 1835, the Fleet Street (London) publisher Tilt and Bogue (Charles Tilt) began publishing Tilt's Miniature Classic Library. Altogether, 50 titles were published, all classics of English Literature.
All of the books are the same: 2 3/4" wide and 4 1/4" high. The covers are embossed with gold, the spines are embossed with gold, the pages are edged with gold and they contain color plates. Printed by Bradbury & Evans, Whitefriars.
This one is Marmion, A Tale of Flodden Field, the epic poem written by Sir Walter Scott and published in 1808.
This copy was published in 1841. It doesn't appear to have been read, as the pages have not all been separated. But inside are little flowers that were pressed by someone along the way.
It's not as frail as you would expect. There's a 1" tear to the fabric of the spine, at the corner. The covers need cleaning and the binding has pulled away a little. All of this can be easily fixed by a bookbinder or a high-end printer.
