Although the book sports a 1961 copyright date, this one is from the 21st printing and possesses an ISBN, making it much more recent. The novel itself was originally published in 1859.

Translated from Danish. First American edition. Very little wear. Two pilots from England are shot down over Germany and end up hiding as patients in a mental hospital for SS officers.

Very little wear. Pages clean, tight, bright. Cover unmarred. The only blemish is the cover gaps a little (see photo #3), not sure why. Has no effect on reading and doesn't show when shelved.The first in the series, where Anne is taken in as an orphan. And so, a series begins. The book is what they describe as an "adapted version", but there is no explanation as to what they mean by that. It is in large print and with many illustrations. It may be abridged, or it may have has the language modernized. I do not have a non-adapted version to use for comparison.

Cover shows some wear, having a number of small indentations, mostly on the back, and an area of price sticker residue on the front. Pages are good, clean and tight. Second book in the series.

In the case of this book, that has led to damage at both ends of the spine (photos #4 and 5) and exposed boards at the corners (photo #6). Gilt stamped print and decoration on the front and spine. Hinge splits front and back, a failure of glue that could be repaired (front split shown in photo #8). Decorative endpapers. The pages are clean, tight and intact, with gilt top edges. I found only two others from 1929 online, neither of which are leather-bound. This seems to be a very rare edition. Originally published in 1919.

On the interior of the jacket is a catalog of publications offered by Grosset & Dunlap at the time. Light blue fabric covered boards with dark blue print and decoration on the front and spine. Grosset & Dunlap is primarily a reprint publisher, but they didn't like to give the date of publication, so the only dates are the years of copyright by Doubleday and Page. This particular edition was most likely published in the 1930s or 40s. The pages are clean, tight and intact, with decorative endpapers. Owner's name on the front endpaper and a few numbers written on the rear. This is a moderately rare book, but not a first edition (in spite of the claims of some other booksellers).

No dust jacket. Green fabric covered boards with embossed initials on the front and gilt print on the spine. Fabric on the spine is faded with age. Wear to the cover is mild. Deckle-edged pages are generally clean and tight, with one illustration that has come loose (while the binding is stitched, illustrations were glued in after the fact). Frontispiece is in color, the other illustrations are black & white. There is a binding split after the front endpaper, not unusual in a book of this age. This reprint of Scribner's first edition from 1907 begins with a 48-page biography of the author before beginning the eleven chapter novel. Stratton-Porter was known for her work as a natural historian and that interest typically shows up in her novels as well. This novel is no exception. A moderately rare book, this is one of a number of books I recently acquired by this author.

Photos from that play are included throughout the book, with the first shown in photo #2. This book has been reprinted in modern times; this is not one of those reprints.

Some wear, including chips around the edges, a nice crease on the back cover, bumped corners, and a ever so slightly curved spine with a quartet of significant creases. The book runs 800 pages long (it has been called a "saga" and at 800 pages, it darn well better be), and those pages remain clean, tight and intact.

A sort of "lost generation" kind of book, focusing on disaffected youth from around the world who converged on Paris to live a life as beggars. Partly described as a "darkly comic romance", that still does not make me comfortable classifying it as either "romance" or "humor". Perhaps a coming of age about those who do it very badly?

Translated from the original Russian by Nicholas Bethell and David Burg. A novel about patients in a cancer ward as an allegory for the Soviet system of government.
