In very good condition other than the front cover, which has two slices of about 11 cm and 4 cm and the remains of a price sticker. The story of the discovery, isolation and uses of sulfur. An entertaining read.

Some wear. A small, stapled book of 79 pages. Owner's name and a coffee stain on the title page, otherwise pages are clean and tight, with many illustrations and maps. Front cover has a couple of creases running top to bottom. Seems rather rare.

That owner was Gertrude Pritchard, apparently a schoolteacher in England early in the twentieth century. I acquired a number of her books from an estate sale in Seattle recently, and have gathered them in a catalogue entitled "Pritchard Library".

Stated first edition (in this series). A reprint from the original (ca. 1920), translated from the original Swedish by F. H. Lyon. The author was the husband of author Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen). Green textured paper covered boards with gilt print on the spine. Book shows little wear other than some spotting on the top page edges (only on the half adjacent to the spine). The dust jacket has two tears (1 cm each) along the lower edge and additional edge and corner wear throughout. The deckle-edged pages are clean, tight and unmarked, with 22 photos in black and white. A rather rare book. Part of a larger series of reprinted African hunting books from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The publishers included a disclaimer about their use of the original language and attitudes, much of which may be offensive by today's standards (see photo #5).

The dust jacket is plastic over paper, and in a few places the plastic has started to peel, allowing atmospheric moisture to discolor the dyes used on the underlying paper. The deckle-edged pages are clean, tight and unmarked, and loaded with black-and-white illustrations. The author of the Amelia Peabody mysteries, Elizabeth Peters (Barbara Mertz) held a PhD in Egyptology, so was well versed in the history of exploration in the time that those mysteries were set. The cover is damaged in two places over the spine. The lower damage appears due to some water intrusion, and interior pages show a little bit of water staining, especially on the outer pages, diminishing towards the center. (See photographs.) The upper damage looks to be from more mundane reasons, just caught on something and tore. There is an impact mark on the lower edge of the front cover as well. This annual review was published between the 1930s and the 1960s. I have found no volumes after this 1963 edition, so this may be the last of the series. The pages are clean tight and unmarked, other than the aforementioned water stain. A rare and valued edition, diminished by the damage but still quite readable with lots of historical information. Book rust colored fabric with gilt print on the front and spine. Wear at the head and tail of the spine, with a piece missing at the top (see photo). Some additional wear at the corners. Covered with a clear plastic jacket that is missing some pieces. Pages are clean, tight and intact. A less glossy type of paper was used for the Statistics section and those pages are quite tanned with age. all water stain at the lower spine manifests to a greater or lesser degree on all pages. (Although the water stain doesn't seem to show in the photographs, it is there. The Kindle camera just can't see it, I guess.) Has no impact on the reading or illustrations.
