I've always wondered about this title, because i really need to know how to drive and do my taxes, and neither one was taught in kindergarten back in the 1950s.

A collection of essays about the unique American condition. Although published 48 years ago, many of the essays are as topical today as they were then. For instance, this is the opening sentence of one very short essay: "One of the many extraordinary aspects of American life is the frequency with which people shoot people." And today, it is even worse. I no longer remember the title of the course I took that had me read this book, but many of the essays still occupy prominent places in my mind.Book is well worn, with the cover color rubbed significantly and creases and folds at the corners. The inner pages are clean and clear, lacking notes, highlighting or underlining. Illustrated throughout, black and white.

Little wear to the book. Deep red fabric is a bit darkened over the spine. Pages are tight and clean, with only a small mark on the front endpaper. No dust jacket. The book consists of an accounting of Kipling's travels across the North American continent from west to east, undertaken in 1889, following his travels through Asia. These essays were communications Kipling sent to Indian newspapers in order to finance his travel. It was first published in book form in 1891. Kipling was not too fond of America, other than its women, it seems. This appears to be fairly rare.

A collection of humorous, perhaps satiric, essays on English history, with illustrations. Pages are clean, tight and bright, with no significant yellowing inside and some brown spotting on the top edges. This is possibly a first edition, as the year is given on the title page, but nothing specific is mentioned on the copyright page regarding editions or printings.

Twenty five essays on science and nature, each originally published in periodicals. This is the sixth annual issue of this publication. All are well written, entertaining and require no specialized knowledge by the reader. Very little wear. 290 pages.

Trade paperback. Very little wear, almost like new. 25 essays on travel by American writers. These essays may have been written 19 years ago, but they are still interesting reads today.

Part of a series called Elementary Classics. Book is worn, with the fabric faded on the spine, and worn through at most edges and corners. Pages are fairly tight and intact. The Introduction, Index and Notes are in English, while the actual essay is in Latin. Written by Cicero in 44 BC. The original owner's name can be found in about three places. That owner was Gertrude Pritchard, a schoolteacher in England at the beginning of the 20th century. I recently acquired a number of her books at an estate sale in Seattle. You can view all of her titles in the catalogue "Pritchard Library".

A massive book on the Celts. Covers the time from the earliest archaeological evidence up to the early post-Roman period. This consists of 41 chapters written by a variety of authors, with many illustrations (the list of illustrations runs almost six pages). Book shows almost no wear, the dust jacket just a little more. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. This book will ship at over five pounds. As such, it is not available for international shipping without a substantial increase in cost. For domestic shipping, the excess costs are included in the list price.

A collection of over 125 short essays on China, both historical and "current events". (Since the book is 42 years old, those current events are history now.) Very few copies of this one on the market.

A collection of 27 scholarly essays on the topic. Printed in Brazil, all articles appear to be in Portuguese. Very little wear. Spine is uncreased and the pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Appears to be fairly rare.

A two-violume set, with ten essays in each volume. Cover has marbled paper and leather at the corners and the spine. Most of the wear is to the leather, which is now well over 100 years old. Pictured is a split in the leather along the spine hinge at the top rear of Volume I. A similar split has formed along the lower front hinge of Volume II. The pages appear to be clean, tight and unmarked. The cover and the decorative endpapers (see photos) indicate that this was likely as deluxe reprint, with no date, probably from the early 20th century. This set will ship at over two pounds. Excess shipping costs are included in the list price.
