Description:
Little wear to the book. Deep red fabric is a bit darkened over the spine. Pages are tight and clean, with only a small mark on the front endpaper. No dust jacket. The book consists of an accounting of Kipling's travels across the North American continent from west to east, undertaken in 1889, following his travels through Asia. These essays were communications Kipling sent to Indian newspapers in order to finance his travel. It was first published in book form in 1891. Kipling was not too fond of America, other than its women, it seems. This appears to be fairly rare.

Description:
Exterior of the book shows some wear at the corners and the head and tail of the spine. One 8 mm tear to the fabric along the lower rear edge. The pages are, for the most part, clean, tight and unmarked. Minimal tanning. One plate near the middle has come loose, and a small group of pages (5) were torn and repaired with tape many years (decades?) ago (see photos). A part of the Riverside Literature Series. (For another in this series, see ST07518.) A rare book priced low due to the damage. Originally published in this series in 1886, reprinted in 1896.

A compact little book with an embossed red fabric cover, coming apart at the top of the spine, both front and back. Contains seven illustrated short stories for children, each with a moral to teach. A number of inscriptions are found on the first few pages, the earliest of which documents a gifting in 1866 (see photo #5). An additional inscription documents the finding of this book in an attic in 1945.

Description:
A rare edition. All I have found online are editions from the early 20th century. This would be a great sourcebook for quiz nights. I was a teacher for 40 years, but some of these questions stump me.No dust jacket. The tan fabric covered boards show just mild wear at the edges and corners, and there is one small dark stain on the right hand edge of the front cover. The real wear problem is that the endpapers have split, both front and rear. Photo #3 shows the front split, the rear is worse. New endpapers might well be in order, if you feel up to that.
First published in 1880.

Description:
A two-violume set, with ten essays in each volume. Cover has marbled paper and leather at the corners and the spine. Most of the wear is to the leather, which is now well over 100 years old. Pictured is a split in the leather along the spine hinge at the top rear of Volume I. A similar split has formed along the lower front hinge of Volume II. The pages appear to be clean, tight and unmarked. The cover and the decorative endpapers (see photos) indicate that this was likely as deluxe reprint, with no date, probably from the early 20th century. This set will ship at over two pounds. Excess shipping costs are included in the list price.

Description:
The padded leather cover is encased in a homemade plastic bookcover, probably to preserve the leather, which is deteriorating, especially over the spine and at some corners. Gilt print on the front and spine. Gift inscription inside the front cover (1884, to Ida from Arthur). Pages are gilt-edged all around. They are also clean, tight and unmarked. Chock full of quotations from the mid-19th century and before. "Nothing so much prevents our being natural as the desire of being so." La Rochefoucauld.
"Our wishes lengthen as our sun declines." Longfellow.
Seems quite rare.

Description:
Multivolume (5) set. In German, published in Berlin in 1908. A translation: The Complete Works of Henrik Ibsen, total output in five volumes. It also notes: einzige autorisierte deutsche ausgabe, in other words, Only Authorized German Edition. Minor shelf wear, still in excellent shape after 113 years. The first volume begins with a two page forward and a 183 page introduction, which probably would be interesting if only I read German. This is a collector's item and must be rather rare, as I was unable to find anything exactly like this offered for sale at any of my website sources. Printed in Germany in 1908, you have to imagine that two World Wars would have eliminated most of the copies that stayed over there. The five volume set weighs in excess of seven pounds; the list price includes excess shipping costs.

Description:
No dust jacket. Fabric over the spine has taken its leave at some point in the past 160+ years. The remaining cover is quite worn, of an indeterminate color due to many stains. A small group of pages, including the cover page and frontispiece, has come loose. The remaining pages are tight and intact, with a lot of spotting and many very dark, yet still readable pages. This book is four volumes in one, covering many hundreds of years of English history. An understandably rare book after all these years. This book will ship at about three pounds. Description:
This is a compact little bible with exceedingly small print. They must have had good eyes back in the middle of the 19th century. Published in 1854, this Bible bears two inscriptions, one from July of 1863, the other from almost exactly 100 years later (August 1963). Pages are gilt-edged, clean and tight, and mostly unmarked, except some red outlining on one map. Cover is embossed leather. In researching this book, I found that there were 44 versions of the Collins Bible, only one of which was older than this one. The other 43 appeared to be from 1857 to 1912, And many of those were asking hundred and even thousands of dollars. If this Bible is a valued collectable, mine is much more reasonably priced.

Description:
Cover is not badly worn for a book over 120 years old, showing mild wear along the edges and at the corners, and a bit of a dark stain to the lower front. Pages are tight and intact with just a few small margin notes. Owner's name and some notes on the front endpaper. A small stain (1 cm dia.), possibly coffee or tea, on the lower page edges, from the half-title page to about page 7 of the poem (see photo #3). The stain does not reach any print. This is Alexander Pope's peotic translationof four books of Homer's Iliad. This edition is from Macmillan's Pocket English Classics series and was originally published in 1899. This is from the third printing, May, 1900. The introduction materials cover 55 pages before the poems begin. This is a very rare book, one which I have been unable to find another like it in any of my online sources. The closest thing I found had no picture and was asking twice my price. With so many reprints, facsimiles and PODs out there, this is an original.

Description:
Book shows wear as might be expected after over 125 years. The cover is two-toned tan and blue fabric, with gilt print and decoration on the front and spine. The fabric over the spine is shiny and unworn (seems to have some kind of coating) while it is dull and pitted on the front and rear. There is some wear at the corners and the head and tail of the spine as well. A hinge split in front has resulted in the free endpaper to the half-title page coming loose (3 sheets). The next packet of six sheets is flirting with the idea of declaring it's freedom as well. A split in the rear endpaper is much less severe, with nothing loose at this time. The remaining pages are clean, tight and unmarked. There is no publication date within the book, but the original owner was kind enough to sign and date the title page (see photos). Originally published in 1776 in two volumes, this edition houses all five books in a single book. This is a rather rare book.

Description:
Maroon cover shows a little wear at the lower corners and the head and tail of the spine. Gilt print on the front and spine. Two names and a few other notations on the front endpaper. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Six maps included, three in color. Could be a first edition, as nothing is said about any previous editions, but publishers were bad about including that kind of information back in the old days. I found four other copies on the market, with dates of 1895, 1902 and 1916, supporting the first edition assumption. The author was a History professor at Harvard. This is a very rare volume.
