Padua, c. 1790. Copper engraving, 25 x 36 cm, engraved by Pietro Scattaglia, black and white, toning to centrefold, blank verso. Published in an Italian edition of Bonne’s ‘Atlas Encyclopédique contenant la géographie ancienne, la géographie moderne et les cartes relatives à la géographie physique’, an atlas co-authored with Nicolas Desmarest, which accompanied the Padua edition of Diderot’s famous ‘Encyclopédie’. The maps (which closely follow those in Bonne’s ‘Atlas de Toutes Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre’) were engraved by Scattaglia in Venice and the whole project reflects late 18th century Italian interest in the French Enlightenment (see Edney, Pedley et al: The History of Cartography volume 4, p. 829). Jacques Nicolas Bellin the elder (1703-1772) was first chief hydrographic engineer of the "Dépôt des cartes, plans et journaux du Ministère de la Marine," charged by Louis XV with mapping the coasts of France first and then the rest of the world. He was also a member of the Royal Society of London. Bellin compiled the maps for Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages, and he later reworked them for his Petit Atlas Francaise and his Petit Atlas Maritime. Tibbetts, Arabia in early maps, 269. Map

Tehran, Sahab Geographic and Drafting Institute, 1961. Second edition, sheet size 48.5 x 68 cm, printed in colours, text in Persian and English, blank verso, folding into publisher’s colour printed paper wrappers; price stamped on front cover, tape mark to back cover. A legend in the borders lists 218 places of interest in pre-Revolutionary Tehran; Sahab’s own premises are identified within a red oval in the right hand part of the map. A first edition was published in 1958. According to the online resource Encyclopaedia Iranica, Sahab Abbas (1921-2000) was encouraged by his father and his teachers to draft maps from a remarkbaly young age: ‘considered by many as the father of modern Persian cartography... he established the SGDI [Sahab Geographic and Drafting Institute] in 1936 and spent the rest of his life expanding it’. Engraved chart, 112 x 68 cms, engraved by John and Charles Walker, black and white (key information highlighted in pink wash), vertical and horizontal folds, some light marginal soiling and one or two short nicks and tears. First published in 1860 with corrections to 1924, covering the coast from Palimurus Shoal in Yemen to the Khorya Morya islands and Ras Sukra in Oman, showing sands and soundings, lighthouses and beacons etc; reference notes on tides; inset maps of Bander Reisut, Merbat Bay and Kishin Bay and two coastal profiles. A controversial figure, Haines made his name surveying the Persian Gulf and became the first British adminstrator of Aden. Map

London, H.G. Collins, c. 1854. Lithographed folding map, sheet size 55.5 x 74 cm, map 48 x 65 cm, original hand colour, some wormholes, mostly to left hand margin, blank verso, folding into original printed paper wrappers. Contemporary with the Crimean War, probably published during the early stages of the conflict before the focus shifted specifically to the Crimea itself and the great naval base of Sevastopol. Map

His clear, elegant and above all scientific approach to map-making provided the source material for many of his contemporaries. Map

Dordrecht and Amsterdam, 1702. Copper engraving, 35.5 x 46.5 cm, black and white, light waterstaining in upper margin, Dutch text on the verso. Oriented to the west, the map was engraved by the Visscher family in the mid 17th century and illustrated a series of Dutch Bibles. The setting of the text on the verso corresponds with that given by Laor for the 1702 edition. Jersusalem and environs at the time of Christ, showing locations mentioned in the New Testament, including those which continued to be sites of Christian worship. Seutter credits the Dutch Catholic theologian Christian Kruik van Adrichem, or Christianus Crucius Adrichomius, 1533-1585; his main source was probably the account of Jerusalem’s antiquities given in van Adrichem’s ‘Theatrum Terrae Sanctae et Biblicarum Historiarum’, published in Cologne in 1590.
