Paris: F. Buisson, Mai , 1791. Octavo, untrimmed in near-contemporary paper wrappers (they incorporate printer's waste from what seems to be a critical edition of Voltaire, c. 1820-30); pp. xii, 227. The first French edition, second state, of the first part of Paine’s Rights of Man, with a preface specially written by Paine for this translation. This edition appeared only two months after the English original; a few copies contain the misprint ‘faux’ for ‘fous’ on p. 162, line 9, but the BNF’s own digitised copy is from this second state, and an error corrected during the print run does not always establish priority of issue. Publication in London had been delayed owing to the printer’s fear of reprisals, and this French edition, with its new preface, proved enormously influential from the outset. Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1879-85. 7 vols., large 8vo. Profusely illustrated throught. The 2500 engravings and 100 maps and plans mentioned on the title include full page chromolithograph and b/w wood engraved plates and numerous illustrations in the text itself. Contemporary quarter-calf over marbled boards, slightly rubbed. The son of a factory worker, Duruy rose to become Napoleon III’s minister of education. He first published his Roman History in the 1840s, but this fully revised and magnificently illustrated edition prepared after his retirement from politics is a different book altogether, described by Britannica (11th ed) as “a really great work”. A popular early nineteenth-century table-game; the board is an engraved snail-shell racetrack, 56 x 54 cm, original hand colour, dissected into 12 panels and laid on linen, worn and thumbed, with slight fraying to lower edge, folding into slip-case with printed paper label, rubbed and worn; complete with the 48pp "Rules and Directions for Playing the Historical Pastime ... with a Short Account of the Principal Events", here dated 1813; the rule-book much used, creased and frayed, with loss of surface to paper wrappers; a few leaves torn and repaired; one leaf defective, with the loss of a few lines of text. Evidently a game much played and much enjoyed, the rule-book with inked and pencilled variations to the rules: being unable to "repeat any circumstance" from the works of Isaac Newton at 145 no longer brings a fine, but the outbreak of war with America on the penultimate space now brings the injunction to return to George I.
