Britannica also adds that “his taste and judgment are frequently warped by prejudice”. His work, the first of its kind to deal with the University and the Colleges, courted controversy. Description:
Vienna, , 1926. 45 folio leaves, each approx. 47 x 20 cm, printed on one side only, versos blank. Printed on acidic paper, with some age-toning, and now enclosed in custom-made mylar sleeves and housed in a cloth drop-box. Freud’s pencilled annotations and corrections are more numerous in the first part of the work. Freud’s ‘Question of lay analysis’ is the fullest, most closely argued expression of his strongly-held view that it is not necessary to be medically qualified in order to practise psychoanalysis. It was written in response to charges brought against a non-medical member of the Vienna Psycho-Analytical Society for ‘quackery’ (treating patients without a medical degree) but it sparked a broader professional debate which would continue for over half a century. Freud and almost all his early colleagues were doctors and, regardless of Freud’s own position on the matter, the question of who should be authorised to practise the treatment methods which… Read More

Description:
Paris: F. Buisson, Mai , 1791. Octavo, untrimmed in near-contemporary paper wrappers (they incorporate printer's waste from what seems to be a critical edition of Voltaire, c. 1820-30); pp. xii, 227. The first French edition, second state, of the first part of Paine’s Rights of Man, with a preface specially written by Paine for this translation. This edition appeared only two months after the English original; a few copies contain the misprint ‘faux’ for ‘fous’ on p. 162, line 9, but the BNF’s own digitised copy is from this second state, and an error corrected during the print run does not always establish priority of issue. Publication in London had been delayed owing to the printer’s fear of reprisals, and this French edition, with its new preface, proved enormously influential from the outset. A difficult book to find in totally unsophisticated condition. Book

London: Printed by William Bowyer; and Sold by Robert Gosling [...], 1726. Folio. First edition. pp. [xxiv], With list of subscribers and with copper-engraved title vignette showing Lodnon and York personified, and with a number of large head and tailpieces (several engraved by J. Clark), and large historiated initials. A little trivial staining to the preliminaries but a pleasing copy of an handsomely printed work. Contemporary panelled calf, some wear, old rebacking and recornering. Twentieth-century book label of Eric Poole. “The one outstanding work on medieval municipal history which appeared in England before the 19th century” (Douglas: English Scholars). The claim on the title, “taken from records”, is the key to Madox’s importance as a scholar. Madox (1666-1727, legal antiquary and historiographer royal) made critical studies of mediaeval English documents that established him as the virtual founder of British administrative history and a precursor of modern… Read More

New York, NY, U.S.A.: A Roc Book, 1995. Mass Market Paperback. Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A magical adventure capturing the grim realism and grim comedy of sword and sorcery from the bad guy's point of view. What is an orc? An orc is a fire plug of a fighting machine made of muscle, hide, talon and tusk, with a villainous disposition and a mean sense of humor. And, of course, an orc is a poor dumb grunt - the much abused foot sol dier of the Evil Horde of Darkness. The usual last battle of Good against Evil is about to begin. Orc Captain Ashnak and his war-band know exactly what they can expect. The forces of Light are outnum b ered, full of headstrong heroes devoid of tactics - but the Light's still going to win. Orcs - the sword fodder in the front line - will die by the thousands. Life's a bitch..

London, 1803 [but c. 1813].. A popular early nineteenth-century table-game; the board is an engraved snail-shell racetrack, 56 x 54 cm, original hand colour, dissected into 12 panels and laid on linen, worn and thumbed, with slight fraying to lower edge, folding into slip-case with printed paper label, rubbed and worn; complete with the 48pp "Rules and Directions for Playing the Historical Pastime ... with a Short Account of the Principal Events", here dated 1813; the rule-book much used, creased and frayed, with loss of surface to paper wrappers; a few leaves torn and repaired; one leaf defective, with the loss of a few lines of text. Evidently a game much played and much enjoyed, the rule-book with inked and pencilled variations to the rules: being unable to "repeat any circumstance" from the works of Isaac Newton at 145 no longer brings a fine, but the outbreak of war with America on the penultimate space now brings the injunction to return to George I.
