Description:
London, Baldwin &: Cradock, 1832. Steel engraving, 34.5 x 39.5 cm, engraved by Josiah Henshall after William Barnard Clarke, original hand colour, a couple of light spots, margins trimmed close as usual with this plate, numbered in an old hand, blank verso. The map focuses on the antiquities: in the lower border are reconstructed elevations of the principal ancient buildings; the remaining three sides are derived from C.R. Cockerell’s panorama. Although Athens had emerged as the capital of newly independent Greece, the population in 1832 was a mere 4000 (estimates of the population in the mid 5th century BCE range from 120,000-180,000). The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was founded in 1826 with the high-minded aim of making 'useful' information available to self-taught members of the working and lower middle classes. Some of the material was decidedly abstruse, subscribers fell away and the Society was wound up in 1848; however, the series of 209 maps published over a… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam, Henricus Hondius, 1633. Copper engraving, 35 x 49 cm, recent hand colour, French text on verso. Crete, with inset maps of Corfu, Zante, Milos, Nicsia, Santorini and Scarpanto. The Mercator-Hondius-Janssonius cartographic publishing house was one of the leading firms of the Dutch Golden Age, at a time when the Low Countries were at the forefront of the international market. The Hondius business traced its roots back to Mercator. The original Mercator Atlas (parts published from 1585 onwards) was not a commercial success; the copper printing plates - including this one - were bought by Jodocus Hondius c. 1604, and a large number of maps were added for his first edition of 1606, which still traded on Mercator's name. His son Henricus and son-in-law Janssonius took over the business and eventually expanded the atlas to create an Atlas Major which rivalled Blaeu's. Zacharakis, Printed maps of Greece, 2209/1450. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Me 36A. Map

Description:
London, Edward Stanford Ltd, 1919. Lithographed map, 70.5 x 55.5 cm, printed in colours, old folds, blank verso. Soteriadis’ map was first published by Stanford’s in 1918, and remained topical enough to be reprinted for British periodical ‘The Sphere’ the following year. Soteriadis produced his map in the year that Allied victory - with Greece on the winning side - seemed to promise greater realisation of the Megali Idea, which included the expansion of Greece into the remaining areas of the Ottoman Empire which remained predominantly ethnically Greek. The Treaty of Sèvres, signed in 1920, granted Eastern Thrace and the hinterland of Smyrna to Greece on the basis of comparable ethnographic data to that employed on our map. 'Greater Greece' was briefly an internationally recognised reality. However, the break-up of Asia Minor sparked a revolution in Turkey, and the ensuing Greco-Turkish War - accompanied by ethnic cleansing and population exchange - changed the map… Read More

Description:
Venice, c. 1696-1708. Copper engraving, 46 x 62 cms, black and white, blank verso. Map of Greece prepared for Coronelli's monumental 13 volume ‘Atlante Veneto’, published 1690-96 in continuation of Blaeu's ‘Atlas Major’; this map was also included in his ‘Corso Geografico Universale’, ‘Il Medittaraneo’ and finally, c. 1708, his ‘Teatro della guerra. Morea, Negroponte, & Adiacenze’. Zacharakis specifies that this last work was printed wiout text on the verso, and it is also the work which supplies the context to Venetian interest in the region: Venice conquered the Peloponnese from the Ottoman Empire during the Morean War 1684-99, and established the Kingdom of the Morea, which survived until 1715. Franciscan scholar Vincenzo Coronelli (he was also an accomplished theologian) was among the leading map and globe makers of his age, making full and innovative use of the latest geographical information. A brief spell in Paris, for example, as… Read More

Description:
Antwerp: Plantin-Moretus , 1624. Copper engraving, 36 x 48 cms, modern hand colour, Latin text on verso. Ancient Thrace, extending from Macedonia to Byzantium, following the cartography of Gastaldi supplemented by information from classical sources including Herodotus, Strabo and Pliny. Our example was published by Balthasar Moretus at the Plantin Press, in the final edition of the Parergon. Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is generally considered the first modern atlas of the world, originally published in 1570. Ortelius gathered and selected the best available cartographic knowledge and presented it in a single volume, duly credited and finely engraved in a consistent style, with explanatory text. The Theatrum was very decorative and hugely popular amongst the wealthy and educated, running into over forty editions in Latin and the major European languages. For Ortelius himself, however, his accompanying atlas of ancient geography, the Parergon, was a "personal work" (Koeman). He… Read More
