Description:
Amsterdam, 1630. Copper engraving, 14 x 18.3 cms, later hand-colour, Dutch text on verso. Anjou, from the Atlas Minor. The original plates were engraved by Jodocus Hondius, but after these were sold to the London trade in the 1620s Janssonius commissioned new ones from Pieter van den Keere and Abraham Goos. Koeman attributes the relatively low number of Dutch editions to the prevalance of Latin and French among the better circumstanced people - potential buyers of atlases. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Me 197. Map

Description:
Paris, 1813. Large engraved map of Europe and the First French Empire in 6 sheets, each approx 66.5 x 94 cm (199.5 x 188 cm in total) each dissected into 21 panels and laid on linen, black and white, engraved by E. Collin; each sheet carries pasted labels of Charles Picquet, Paris, with a miniature index map, coloured to identify the relevant sheet; the sheets are also identified by a vellum tab with the title "Carte de la France" and a number from 1 to 6. They are housed within the original publishers book-form slipcase, lined with duck-egg blue paper and bound in red straight-grained quarter morocco, gilt-ruled with gilt ornaments and title lettered direct to spine, and with marbled edges. Slight rubbing to slipcase, and the top edge is detached, possibly for ease of removing the maps. Though described in the title as a road map of France, more accurately it reflects the territorial extent and ambitions of Napoleons French Empire, stretching to the Confederation of the Rhine…

Description:
Rouen, E. Renault, c. 1900. Souvenir handkerchief printed on fine linen, 67.5 x 73 cm, engraved by A. Buquet, printed in black and red, some spotting, blank verso; a military service number has been embroidered in red on the verso. It is in the same format as the series of thirteen 'mouchoirs militaire d'instructions' patented by the commandant of the Rouen garrison, Pierre Perrinon, in 1875. These instructional handkerchiefs carried basic information about drill, kit, weapons handling, first aid for the wounded and other essential military topics in a durable and convenient format. Our map does not seem to be part of the numbered series, but is produced by the same Rouen publisher and firm of designers (l'atelier Buquet was already known for its illustrated handkerchieves) and details the structure of the French army beneath the map. After defeat in the Franco-Prussian War the Third Republic re-introduced widespread conscription, and the handkerchiefs became a useful…

Description:
Antwerp: Patria N.V.; the Hague, 1939-40. Map of the Franco-German frontier, sheet size 73 x 55 cm, printed in colours, illustrated with photographs showing the formidable obstacles faced by either side, Dutch text, blank verso. Published during the Phoney War, when Belgium and the Netherlands had both proclaimed their neutrality and most observers anticipated a drawn out conflict on the continent as there had been between 1914-18. British newspapers began publishing new war maps of the Western Front. The costly chain of French fortifications known as the Maginot Line did indeed deter a frontal assault, as during the Blitzkrieg of May 1940 the German forces swept through the neutral Low Countries, bypassing it altogether. Worldcat locates half a dozen examples of this map in Dutch institutions, giving three OCLC numbers: 71569063, 192112338 and 68942430. Map
