Londini [London] typis excudit J.F. Dove, veneunt apud Ricardum Priestley., 1821. 4 vols. 8vo. Some very trivial spotting, but generaly very clean. Contemporary half vellum, gilt, over marbled boards, with crimson morocco lettering and numbering pieces. A little minor wear to the edges, but a handsome set. Book

Lipsiae [Leipzig], in Libraria Weidmannia, 1797- 1811. 5 vols. 8vo (all published). pp. xviii, 590; xviii, 372; [ii], 438; xxxii, 414, [ii]; xviii, 452. Handsome late nineteenth-century crimson half morocco, gilt. Armorial bookplate of Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby, three times Prime Minister, and translator of Homer. An “excellent and critical edition”, according to Dibdin, though Ruhkopf sadly never completed it. Friedrich Ernst Ruhkopf (1760-1821) was a director of the Lyzeums of Hanover and a member of the royal society of the sciences in Goettingen. [Twickenham] Strawberry-Hill, 1760. 4to. pp.[vi], 525, [i]. Engraved title vignette and tail-piece by Grignion. Spotting on title and final leaf; two ink library stamps of Repton School on title and one in the text. Modern half-calf in period style. Edges untrimmed. The only classical text and "most distinguished piece of printing to come from the Press at Strawberry Hill". Bentley’s notes were edited by his grandson Richard Cumberland. Amstelaedami [Amsterdam], ex officina Wetsteniana, 1708. 4to. pp. [xviii], 476, [lxxii] + 8 engraved plates, but lacking the additional engraved title-page. Edited by Johan van Broekhuizen. Some spotting. Contemporary blind-stamped vellum.Ink stamp of Repton School library to title. From the library of the great English bibliophile Michael Wodhull (1740-1816), classical scholar and Dibdin's 'Orlando', who attended every London book sale between 1764 and 1800 and bought extensively but, as De Ricci says, also with great judgement. He normally recorded the date, place of acquisition and price paid on the flyleaf. In this instance Edwards’s sale, March 3d 1794; the purchase price appears to be encoded. Wodhull neatly excised much of this information in books which he consigned to auction himself in 1801 and 1803, so our example likely remained with the bulk of his library, auctioned by Sotheby’s in 1886. Cantabrigiae [Cambridge], Typis Academicis, Impensis Jacobi Tonson, 1701. 4to. pp. [iv], 520. Without engraved frontispiece. Some light browning/age-toning. Contemporary panelled calf, worn, spine gilt, joints cracked. Edited by Dr Leng, later bishop of Norwich. Tonson’s four finely printed quarto editions of Horace, Virgil, Terence and Catullus were among the first works executed for the Cambridge University Press. They were certainly a milestone in the career of Tonson himself (he was soon planning the great Caesar of 1712) and set new standards for the English trade generally. Dibdin II, 473. Book

Title printed in red and black. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt; upper joint, headcaps and corners skilfully renewed and tooling made good.' A very neat and well printed edition' (the printer being Joseph Bentham at the Cambridge University Press, as the colophon reveals). Five years later Sandby sold his bookselling business to a naval officer on half pay, one John McMurray, the founder of the publishing house which still bears his name. Kaspar von Barth’s edition of the neoplatonist philosopher Aeneas of Gaza, the first in the original Greek (a Latin translation had appeared in Venice in 1513), first published in 1653 and reisssued with a new title page, as here, in 1655; Zacharias Scholasticus was a near contemporary, born near Gaza, noted as an ecclestiastical historian. Title with woodcut Aldine device, one or two marginal notes (trimmed) and very occasional underlining in an early hand, old paper repair strengthening the gutter of B1 (f. 5), a little very light spotting; lacks 2 final leaves, blank and blank except for repeated printer’s device. Mid twentieth-century blind-stamped calf and bookplate, early ownership inscription shaved from title. This edition contains a new preface dated 1558; the colophon is dated 1559. Two works in one volume, folio; fourth and first editions pp. [x], 28, [viii], 476; [16], 238, [2] (advertisment leaf) + (in the first work) engraved portrait frontispiece of L'Estrange by Roger White after Kneller and full page engraving of animals from the fables gathered around Æsop (potbellied and misshapen as per popular tradition), both plates a little soiled and frayed. The table has been bound after the 'life of Æsop' in the first work. General light toning in the second work (due to paper stock). Rebound in good quality full tan morocco in the mid twentieth century, with one of the original panelled calf covers pasted onto an endpaper. Text in Greek, with Latin translation following.Contemporary French red morocco, gilt-ruled with floral device to spine, all edges gilt; letterpress book label to pastedown, ‘De la bibliotheque de Me. Esbran, Avocat au Parlement de Normandie, 1784’. Foulis issued two versions of the Meditations of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the same year; both follow Richard Ibbetson’s edition, but they were formatted differently. Our example is in two parts: the original Greek text followed by a Latin translation; the other version is a single volume in parallel text (Greek text with Latin translation on the facing page). Glasguae [Glasgow]: In Aedibus Academicis. Excudebat Robertus Foulis Academiae Typographus, 1743. 8vo. pp. [ii], 53, [i], 52. Greek text followed by Isaac Casaubon’s Latin translation. Contemporary calf, rebacked, corners renewed. Foulis was elected University Printer on March 31st 1743, and this is the first book where he styles himself ‘Academiae Typographus’. Peter Needham’s excellent edition was first published in 1712. 1744 dated ownership signature, ‘E Libris Bagnall’, on the free endpaper, with two 20th century inscriptions beneath: R.J. Mockridge, St John’s Oxford in 1908; gift to D Hughes from the Rev R. Mockridge, then at Harwicke Rectory, August 1958. Bookseller’s ticket (R. Saywell) to pastedown. Coloniae Allobrogum [Geneva], sumptibus Petri &: Jacobi Chouet , 1621. Folio, first printing of the original Greek text. pp. [xx], 168, 520, [xlii]. Paralllel Greek and Latin text, light waterstaining, mostly to lower margin, contemporary blind-ruled calf, minor wear, headcaps and lettering piece renewed. The second century physician and philosopher Sextus Empiricus is our major surviving source for Greek scepticism. The earliest printed editions were Latin translations by the scholar-printer Henri Estienne and the theologian and humanist Gentius Hervet, first published in the 1560s and included here to accompany the original Greek text. Sextus was read widely over the following 300 years, and his works had a profound influence on the thinking of Montaigne, Descartes, Hume, Hegel and other pivotal figures in early modern and enlightenment philosophy.
