Description:
London, Baldwin &: Cradock, 1832. Steel engraving, approx 31.5 x 40 cm, engraved by Benjamin Rees Davies after William Barnard Clarke, original hand colour to map with black and white elevations of principal buildings beneath and a view of Antwerp above, numbered in and old hand, blank verso. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was founded in 1826 with the high-minded aim of making 'useful' information available to self-taught members of the working and lower middle classes. Some of the material was decidedly abstruse, subscribers fell away and the Society was wound up in 1848; however, the series of 209 maps published over a 14 year period from 1829 onwards were highly praised for their superior quality, accuracy and aesthetic appeal and remain an outstanding achievement. The province of Groningen in the Netherlands, set within an elaborate strapwork border, published in the ‘Atlas Minor’. A new series of maps, replacing those by Jodocus Hondius, was engraved by Abraham Goos and Pieter van den Keere for the 1628 edition. Description:
Amsterdam, c. 1740. Copper engraving, 52 x 58 cm, inset map of Texel and Vlieland in upper left corner, original hand colour, one or two marginal nicks and tears, blank verso. Our example of Caspar Specht’s map has been annotated in a contemporary hand to record ‘dyk breuken’ (dyk breaches) 1740-41 and the location of ‘hulp gaaten’ (sluice gates), all in the southern portion of the map. There does indeed seem to have been severe flooding in the Nijmegen area in the winter of 1740-41. The Ottens firm was known for creating composte atlases, constructed to order according for particular clients; detailed local knowledge would be in keeping. Map

Amsterdam, 1616. Copper engraving, 10 x 13.5 cm, black and white, Latin text on verso. Miniature map of the Low Countries published in the first edition of Tabularum geographicarum contractarum libri, a geographical work which is normally catalogued under the name of its author, Bertius. The maps are generally reduced from the cartography in the folio Mercator-Hondius atlas, and were mostly engraved by Jodocus Hondius, eldest son of the printer, who also bears the same name. Geoffrey King calls them "undoubtedly the finest set of miniature maps ever printed" (Miniature Antique Maps p. 96). Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Lan 11A Map

Description:
Paris, 1719. Copper engraving, 21.5 x 16.7 cm, original hand colour in outline, blank verso. The Low Countries, with a note on the Dutch Revolt at the foot of the map (concluding with a remark about Dutch adherence to ‘la religion prétendue réformée’ which leaves no doubt about his sympathies). Our map was published in Chiquet’s ‘Le nouveau et curieux atlas géographique et historique ...’. Chiquet (1673-1721) was a relatively successful Parisian engraver, print and mapseller. He published Antoine Menard’s ‘Le nouveau et curieux atlas’ in 1711, and reprinted it with Menard’s name burnished from the plate and replaced with his own and a new date, 1719, as here. Map

Cologne, c. 1575. Copper engraving, 30.5 x 50 cms, original hand colour, skillful restoration to bottom left-hand corner, which was torn with loss affecting the printed area; 11cm tear to left of centrefold closed without loss. German text to verso. Limbourg or Limburg, Belgium. The Civitates Orbis Terrarum was one of the most significant cartographic works of the late sixteenth-century, printed over 45 year period between 1572 and 1617. It was the first systematic city atlas (containing the first accurate surveys of many towns) and was inspired in part by the scope of Abraham Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terarrum which gathered together the best available geographical information. Town views and plans were all taken from direct observation rather than improvised in the manner of some earlier geographical works - it was not unknown for the same view to appear in more than one guise. Georg Braun wrote the text and Ortelius himself - who travelled through Italy with the artist Joris Hoefnagel -… Read More

London, c. 1845. Copper engraving, 80 x 56.5 cm, original hand colour, blank verso; from Wyld's New General Atlas. James Wyld senior established a highly successful firm of map publishers, which passed to his son when he died relatively young in 1836, apparently from 'overwork'. He introduced the new process of lithography to map printing, was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society and was appointed Geographer to both George IV and William IV. James Wyld junior inherited a thriving business. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and succeeded his father as Geographer to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Map

Description:
London: John & Paul Knapton,, 1745. Copper engraving, 39.5 x 49 cms, engraved by James Basire, modern hand colour, blank verso. Published in Nicholas Tindal's continuation of Rapin de Thoyras's "History of England"; many of the maps illustrating the work depict military actions fought by the British during the campaigns of the War of the Spanish Succession, mostly in Spain and the Low Countries. The Allies in the context of this conflict were Spanish supporters of the Habsburg Archduke Charles of Austria, with the backing of Austrian, British, Dutch, Prussian and Portugese troops, and they faced a Franco-Spanish Bourbon army. At stake was the European balance of power, which would shift dramatically if the Bourbon Philip V was allowed to unify Spain and France. A compromise peace was achieved in 1714: Philip V remained King of Spain but was excluded from the French line of succession, precluding a union between the two kingdoms. Map
