Small 8vo (11.6 cm tall), pp. [lxii] including printed paste-downs (irregular pagination, with an extra leaf between numbers 6 and 8, and an extra leaf between 11 and 16); including 6 double-page maps with original hand colour and 4 b/w town plans (Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds); plus 3 folding plates: a b/w map of railways in England and Wales, a folding table of gradients, and a glazed folding map of London. Publisher’s cloth, glazed paper label on the cover with price of 1 shilling. Some wear to binding, particularly the spine, but a generally pleasing example of a fragile item. The remaining maps are numbered as follows: 1-61, 64-70, 73-79,81; sheet 62 (entirely blank, part of the North Sea) is not bound in as usual. Contemporary half calf, rebacked, corners and covers worn. Fordham notes that ‘this appears to be the first map upon which the meridian of Greenwich is subsituted for that of London (or more exactly St Paul’s Cathedral) which had been in use on English maps since its introduction by John Seller in 1676’. Jacques Nicolas Bellin the elder (1703-1772) was first chief hydrographic engineer of the "Dépôt des cartes, plans et journaux du Ministère de la Marine," charged by Louis XIV with mapping the coasts of France first and then the rest of the world. He was also a member of the Royal Society of London. The present work is divided into three parts: a geographical description of the three kingdoms; a description of the coasts, harbours, soundings etc; an analysis of the maps. Juvenile atlas of Europe, 24.3 cm tall, pp. 16 + 12 chromolithographed map plates with blank versos, text leaves somewhat browned, stapled rather than sewn with some rust to staples, tan printed boards backed with green cloth, somewhat rubbed and worn. Children’s ownership inscriptions pencilled to end-papers. The framing device is a little dark: Filip and his sister Cora are orphans, living with their aunt and uncle and cousins in New York City. Their uncle has to go to Europe on a business trip and the children are to accompany him, but Filip is injured and unfit to travel, so the cousins agree to write letters to him from each country they visit - in verse, as that would be more fun (the final letters are sent by Cora from Russia and Filip from Switzerland, so he must have been able to catch up with the family party at some point). The collation of plates includes the map end-papers in each volume; many of the plates are folding, many are printed in colours. Green publisher’s cloth with Survey of India crest (pre and post Independence according to date) blocked in gilt on the front covers. Vol I is ex-library, Directorate of Colonial Surveys (later, Directorate of Overseas Surveys) with the usual ink stamps including withdrawal stamp, and shelf mark on the spine. Pictorial bookplate of acclaimed sculptor Anne Seymour Damer (1748-1828) dated 1793, engraved by Francis Legat (1755-1809) and designed by the painter Agnes Berry, whose sister Mary was one of Damer’s closest friends. Decorative printed boards designed by MacDonald Gill, who also designed the double-page map on pp. 20-21, ‘The world in the time of Cabot’. Some wear to covers, with an indentation to lower cover where the book has been at the bottom of a pile tied tightly with string. This is one of the examples of the book presented by the LNER, specifically by the Distrtict Passenger Manager at Newcastle-on-Tyne, who has filled in the appropriate space on the first page. On the verso of the presentation leaf is an additional illustration for the LNER edition, Brangwyn’s ‘The Border Bridge’, advertising the east coast route to Scotland. The book is lavishly illustrated in colour throughout, while the folding plate depicts the pageant itself, for which Brangwyn designed the scenery. Rusting to staples, covers a little bowed. Uniform volumes chronicled port repair works at Ostend, Dieppe, Boulogne and Calais; COPAC suggests various dates, c. 1945-1950. 21st Army Group, commanded by Montgomery, was the principal British and Canadian formation in the Allied invasion of northwestern Europe, which evolved into the BAOR. Sayer..., 1763. 8vo, pp. 136, [iv] + engraved folding map with original hand colour in outline, ‘Kitchin’s most accurate map of the roads of England and Wales’, trivial stain in bottom right corner, imprint of Andrew Drury. Contemporary mottled sheep, joints and headcaps renewed. Contemporary ownership signature of Catherine Cornwalle. Invoice from Charles Traylen dated 1946 loosely inserted. The map appeared in the London Magazine in the same year, with Thomas Kitchin credited as the engraver in the bottom right hand margin, and without Drury’s imprint. John Rocque, who played a leading role in revitalising English cartography in the mid 18th century, had died in 1762 and this work appeared under the imprint of his widow, Mary Ann. Andrew Drury moved in the same Huguenot circles, and Robert Sayer (who was still toward the beginning of a long and successful career) had previously worked with both John Rocque and Drury. London: Chapman and Hall, 1842. First edition of this pocket county atlas (21 cm tall). Title page, index leaf + 46 steel engraved maps with original hand colour in outline, all but four of which are double-page; Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Yorkshire are on two folded sheets. Some paper repairs to the folds of the larger maps, occasional spotting, adhesion damage, short splits and other signs of use. Original green publisher’s roan wallet style binding with a tuck, neat restoration to joints, title lettered direct in gilt on the cover. Sidney Hall was almost certainly the first to use the new hardened steel printing plates for map work, mostly for small format educational works such as ‘A Grammar of General Geography' (1821) and  ‘Butler’s Atlas of Ancient Geography' (1822).
