Description:
[London?], c. 1900. Second Anglo-Boer War souvenir handkerchief, 45 x 45 cm, printed in blue ink on fine linen, a couple of trivial spots, blank verso. Set in the borders of a map showing the contested regions of South Africa (chiefly Orange Free State and Transvaal) is the text of Rudyard Kipling's poem 'The Absent-Minded Beggar', with the music of Arthur Sullivan. The map is further adorned with portraits of Queen Victoria and Field Marshal Lord Roberts, who was commander of British forces in the field between December 1899 and December 1900. It was published by the Daily Mail, then a relatively new but highly successful British newspaper: established in 1896, its circulation had soared to over a million - the largest in the world - by the war's end in 1902. Kipling presented his poem to the Mail, which established a charitable fund (soon known as the Absent Minded Beggar Fund) to provide comforts for British troops on campaign and support for their families at home.… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam, 1645. Copper engraving, 50 x 38.5 cm, early hand-colour, Dutch text on verso. The setting of text is correct for the 1645 edition, but the colour is more typical of the late 17th century, ca. 1680. The map, very similar to one by Blaeu, represents most of subequatorial Africa; sparse and speculative interior detail includes part of one of the Ptolemaic lakes thought to be the source of the Nile. Description:
London, Samuel Augustus Oddy, 1811. Copper engraving, 28.5 x 25 cm, original hand-colour, blank verso; the continent of Africa, published in ‘Oddy’s New General Atlas of the World’. The map features an inset of the Azores and Cape Verde islands. Much of the interior detail is highly speculative. James Wallis (fl. 1810-1825) was born in Southampton in 1784, the son of a bricklayer. Apprenticed to John Roper in 1799, he learned the art of engraving. In later life he is variously recorded as a commission and discount agent (imprisoned for debt in 1835), a stationer, and a dealer in beer and wine. Map

Description:
London, Charles Knight, c. 1844. Steel engraving, 33 x 39 cm, engraved by John & Charles Walker, original hand colour in outline, slight spotting, numbered in an old hand in the margin, blank verso. The map reflects the state of European knowledge of the interior before the mid 19th century search for the sources of the Nile. For example, it marks the routes of René Caillié, the first European to return alive from Timbuktu in 1828, Dixon Denham’s journey across the Sahara to Lake Chad in 1823 and RGS founder member James Edward Alexander’s journey through Namaqualand and Damaraland in 1837. Much of the other information is tentative or speculative, for example the ‘supposed sources of R. Zaire’. For this edition, some references have been revised; a symbol which denoted the ‘furthest Portuguese settlement’ in Angola in the first edition of 1839 has been replaced with more detailed information about the rivers and settlements in the region. Further east,… Read More

Description:
London, Blackie and Son, 1860. Lithograph, 36.5 x 50 cms, drawn and engraved by Edward Weller, insets of Mauritius, Réunion and Natal, original hand colour in outline, blank verso; published in ‘The imperial atlas of modern geography... compiled and engraved from the most authentic sources under the supervision of W.G. Blackie’. Some of the most recent geographical information about the interior of the continent appears on the map, though much remains tentative or speculative. Mount ‘Keenia’ had been sighted by a German missionary in 1849; Lake ‘Taganyika’ (Tanganyika), sighted by Burton and Speke in 1858, is named, though here it seems to be an extension of Lake Maravi (generally identified with Lake Nyasa); the vast body of water which Speke named Lake Victoria is not marked at all. The regions which remained unexplored by Europeans are simply labelled “independent pagan tribes”. Map

Mallet was a military engineer, cartographer and mathematician in the service of the French King, Louis XIV. Description:
London, 1921. Folding lithographically printed map, GSGS War Offfice sheet 2692, 95 x 72 cm, dissected into 30 panels and laid on linen, printed in colours, printing of title and legend a little weak, one or two neat annotations in blue pen, printed bookseller’s label of Sifton Praed, lacks slipcase. First published in 1914, this revised edition highlights adminstrative boundaries. Though technically administered jointly by Egypt and Britain between 1899 and 1956, today’s Sudan and South Sudan were effectively ruled as a Crown Colony. The Sudan Political Service, often considered the elite of the British colonial civil servants in Africa, never employed more than 150 Europeans at once. Map

Description:
Berlin, bearbeitet in der Topographischen Abteilung der Landesaufnahme, 1911. Folding map of !Karas region of Namibia, sheet size 68 x 59.5 cm, printed in colours, dissected into 12 panels and laid on linen, with printed label and sheet number (29) on the cover. Covers the Warmbad/!Karas region in modern Namibia, then German South West Africa, which was the scene of one of the earliest attempted genocides of the 20th century between 1904-1907. A fort at Warmbad manned by Schutztruppe was established in 1905. At least half the Herero and Namaqua populations were killed through starvation and the consumption of poisoned well water in the Namib Desert after they rebelled against German colonial rule. Our example of the map has a number of old ink stamps. In the Nazi period it was in the possession of the Geographisches Institut Koloniale Auteilung Univeritat Berlin (the colonial section of the geographical institute of Berlin University); it later passed into the C.I.A. Map Library. Map
