Hazard Stevens, son of Isaac, also was injured at Chantilly, but later, too, became a general in the army, while being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

This volume contains Baroness Clementine Spencer-Churchill's "Preface to The Collected Works". Promoted as an edition limited to 3000 sets for the world, in fact only 1700 were sold. This volume is a "Subscriber's Proof Copy": it was sent to R. Hunt as a sample volume, and it may lack some textual corrections, and may have redrawn maps. It was directed to be returned to the publisher after examination. Its binding matches the published volumes. Only complete sets of 34 + 4 volumes were to be sold by the publisher. The General Editor for this set was Frederick Woods, the bibliographer of Churchill [ See the Woods bibliography p. 391].

The 1st Mississippi Cavalry (African Descent) was organized October 9, 1863 to March 1, 1864 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Designation of Regiment changed to Third United States Colored Cavalry on March 11, 1864. Major Main became the regimental historian. These troopers saw a lot of action. Their attack against the Black River Bridge, on November 27, 1864, was lauded as "one of the most daring and heroic of the war. Two previous and well-organized attempts by some of the best troops in the department, had failed to dislodge the enemy and destroy this bridge. ." This work is scarce in any edition.
