Great Parliamentary Scandals, Four Centuries of Calumny, Smear and Innuendo

By Parris, Matthew

London: Robson Books, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. Inscription and owner's signature on first free end-paper, else fine/price-clipped. 8vo. Boards. Pp. xxii. 346. Illustrated. Bibliography. Index. Assistant Editors: David Prosser and Andrew Pierce. With a Foreword by the Rt Hon. David Mellor QC MP. The author, Matthew Parris, was himself a member of Parliament and later, notably, wrote about politics for The Times. For his former role he was elected because, he claims, he rescued a dog from the Thames, and his greatest achievement was an effort to end the imprisonment of prostitutes. In this book he writes, most entertainingly, about some of Britain's juiciest scandals, such as the one which has recently been dramatized for TV starring Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw: Few twentieth-century scandals rival the Profumo affair, but the humiliation of Jeremy Thorpe comes close.

An English Affair, Sex, Class and Power in the Age of Profumo

By Davenport-Hines, Richard

London: Harper Press, 2013. First edition. Hardcover. Fine copy/fine. 8vo. Boards. Pp. xvi, 400. Illustrated: (16) pp. of plates. Notes. Index. The first eight chapters of this book introduce us--if we have forgotten--to the brilliant cast for the great scandal of the 1960s: Prime Minister (Harold Macmillan), War Minister (John Profumo), Lord (Bill Astor), Doctor (Stephen Ward), Good-time Girls (Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies) and so on. What happened in 1963 marked the end of a deferential England where hypocrisy, snobbishness, bullying and class superiority began, finally, to come to an end. It was--and remains--a fascinating drama.
