Includes 8 pp. of photocopied expurgations in the author's hand. Also laid in is a 12-page Davis & Orioli booksellers' catalogue of first editions, undated but probably from the late 1930s. Pino Orioli (1884-1942) was a friend of Norman Douglas, Richard Aldington, and D. H. Lawrence. In 1928 he undertook to publish in Italy the first edition ofLady Chatterley's Lover, in an unexpurgated edition of 1000 copies. Later, he had a bookshop at 30 Museum Street, London. This memoir had included various imprudent comments about his experiences as a gay man. But because such activities were illegal in Britain in the 1930s, discretion forbade them to be published and so they were excised. Frenich, Foss: K. D. Duval, 1975. First edition. Paperback. Fine copy. Large 8vo. Paper-bound. Pp. 68, (ii). Illustrated: 39 plates in color and 7 in black & white. Laid in: the price list and "A Brief Foreword" by William R Cagle, Acting Librarian for the Lilly Library. With an Introduction by Edgar Mansfield. The book was printed in Verona, Italy, by the Stamperia Valdonega. In the early 1970s the Scottish booksellers, Kulgin Duval and Colin Hamilton, commissioned some 24 British bookbinders to produce splendid bindings for an exhibition held at Francis Edwards, Ltd in London. The entire collection was later bought by the Lilly Library at Bloomington, Indiana. This is the catalogue that Duval and Hamilton issued before the collection was sold. It includes most interesting introductions for each of the bookbinders, who included Jeff Clements, Sydney M Cockerell, Elizabeth Greenhill, Arthur Johnson, and Edgar Mansfield. Among the books rebound were some from the Officina Bodoni, also in Verona.

One of the catalogues (number 242) has a personal note written on the inside of the front cover and signed by Frizzell .

As usual for books from David R. Godine, this one is itself an excellent example of a fine design. It provides illustrations of each of the selected books, along with a commentary.
