Description:
Continuing its policy of publishing extended explorations of Arthurian subjects, this eighth volume of Arthurian Literature contains four articles. Elizabeth Archibald addresses the reasons for the insertion of the story of Mordred's incestuous birth into many versions of the Arthurian legend (including Malory's) from the early 13th century on, and follows its development from the Vulgate Cycle to later Arthurian narratives. The use of irony to point up aspects of the Lancelot-Guinevere relationship in the prologue to Le Chavalier de la Charrete is explored by Jan Janssens. The early 13th-century Romance of Fergus is introduced and translated by D.D.R. Owen, who finds it of special interest not just because of its uniquely Scottish setting, but also because its use of parody foreshadows later medieval comedy; Scottish concerns also figure in Edward Donald Kennedy's discussion of the 15th-century chronicler John Hardyng's use of the story of Galahad's grail quest, and the changes he made.

Description:
This collection of new essays on Arthurian themes contains one on Layamon, two on Chrétien, and one on Victorian art. They are as follows: Oliver Goulden, `Erec et Enide': The Central Section The opening and closing sections of Erec et Enide have always attracted critical attention: Dr Goulden argues that the central section, often neglected, is crucial to our understanding of the poem.Claude Luttrell, The Arthurian Hunt with a White Bratchet:The theme of the hunt with a magical hound is found from the Mabinogion to Malory, and this essay charts its gradual change from the supernatural.W.R.J.Barron and Françoise Le Saux, Aspects of Layamon's Narrative Art: Layamon's Arthurian epic has been regarded as little more than a lively translation of Wace, here his different approach to narrative is examined, and shown to be an original aspect of his work.Christine Poulson, Arthurian Legend in Fine and Applied Art of the 19th and early 20th Centuries: A Catalogue of Artists:Following the bibliographies of…

Description:
This latest issue of Arthurian Literature continues the tradition of the journal in combining theoretical studies with editions of primary Arthurian texts. There is a special focus on Chrétien de Troyes, with articles considering his identity, providing a new reading of Le Chevalier de la Charrete, and giving an account of a discovery of an important new fragment of the First Continuation. Other essays deal with Glastonbury, at the heart of the English Arthurian legend;the Scottish treatment of the Arthur story in the Reformation period; and the Morte Darthur in the context of fifteenth-century chivalric encyclopaedias. Contributors: SARAH KAY, NICK CORBYN, LISA JEFFERSON, AELRED WATKIN, JEANNE KROCHALIS, DAVID ALLAN, KAREN CHEREWATUK

Description:
This new volume of Arthurian Literature, the first under its new editor Keith Busby, is devoted to the Roman van Walewein(The Romance of Walewein (Gawain)) by Penninc and Pieter Vostaert, an undisputed gem of Middle Dutch literature which has recently become accessible to an English-speaking audience through translation. Essentially a fairy-tale written into Arthurian romance, it presents a Gawain quite different to the man found in the English Sir Gawain and the Green Knightor the French Gauvain.

Description:
The tenth volume of Arthurian Literature continues some ofthe themes of earlier issues, as well as exploring unfamiliar andcontroversial ground. The second part of CHRISTINE POULSON's survey of the Arthurian legend in 19th-century art is an analysisby subject of the works catalogued by artist in Arthurian Literature IX. A. H. W. SMITH provides a substantial update to MaryWildman's bibliography of modern Arthurian literature which appeared in Arthurian Literature II, adding not only recent works butalso many items missing from the earlier list. Mr Smith also contributesan article on Ponticus Virumnius and the text of Gildas, one of themore intriguing mysteries of Arthurian text history, and sets outVirumnius' claim to have seen a poem by Gildas which has since disappeared. ARMEL DIVERRES writes on the origins of Chretien de Troyes'Conte del Graal; he argues that we should seek the poet's inspiration in the crusading activities of Philip of Flanders, supporting his case with a careful examination of…

Description:
In 1981 the first Arthurian Bibliography appeared, an exhaustive alphabetical author-listing of all critical material recorded in the standard Arthurian bibliographies up to 1978. This was followed in 1983 by the second volume, giving full indexes by topic, key-word and individual work/author to form a complete subject-index of every topic in Arthurian literature. Summaries and reviews were also indicated where they existed. Arthurian Bibliography III updates this invaluable reference work for Arthurian scholars to 1992. Compiled from the BBSIA, it conveniently contains both author-listing and subject-index in one volume.

Description:
These are the uber-brats of the Bible kids who killed, committed incest, sold siblings into slavery, or asked for an enemy s head on a dish. Each of the 28 stories in this book focus on a boy or girl from the Bible whose conduct was the stuff of parents nightmares. Some of these kids repented; others did not. Yet whether they turned their lives around or persisted in their wicked ways, there are lessons to be learned from these stories that we can apply to our lives today. The tone of the book is light-hearted, but not irreverent. The idea is to recognise in biblical characters our own family s foibles and failings. Furthermore, it is more interesting to read about rotten kids than about kids who are little angels it s certainly closer to actual family life. But the bottom line is that Bad Kids of the Bible can teach our kids (and their parents) what not to do, and the ones who cleaned up their act can show us how we can make improvements in our own lives, too.

Description:
The last tribal culture in Europe was that of thte Celtic lands, whose landscape and traditions hold echoes of the ancient religion of nature and its symbols of death and rebirth. The mysteries begin in the frenzy of battle, where the hero is transfigured and a God appears; or in a ghostly circle of stones left by an unknown people; or in the mystic centre of the Celtic Cross; or in the stone heads of Gaul and Ireland, which face both ways; or in the illusive in-between place of mist and twilight. Well illustrated throughout, this glossy, A4-size hardback combines photographs of real architectural locations and artefacts with ancient Celtic mythology to create a fascinating book.

New information never before published! Who actually built the Pyramids of the Giza Plateau, and why? Is there really a Hall of Records under the Giza Plateau? Are the mythological figures of ancient Egypt Osiris, Isis, Anubis, Horus, and others, actually the same characters represented in certain books of the Old Testament? How did we evolve on this planet? Where were we before earth? On May 3, 2000, a certain three individuals independently (physically and actually) made their way to Cairo for a rendezvous. These three individuals, up to this point, had no idea as to what event was about to unfold. They only knew that their previous training and unique skills would be required. It was here that they were given the co-ordinate entry points. Two world-recognized experts on Ancient Egyptian Civilization and Sites, Howard Middleton-Jones, and researcher, James M. Wilkie, bring forth some of the most startling revelations ever imparted in the history of humankind.Price is for both books.

Description:
What is the Grail? Is it a stone? Is it a chalice? Or is it something even more powerful—an enduring idea that has captured humanity's imagination across the centuries? Fictional accounts of the Grail have topped best-seller lists over the years, The Da Vinci Code being only the most recent among them. But the truth about the Grail—where truth can be brought to light—is even more electrifying than the most exciting novel ever written. This informative and beautifully illustrated book recounts the Grail's story, from its early appearances in ancient myths to its many references in historical documents, literature, and the popular entertainment of today. Grail scholar John Matthews explores many previously unknown facets of the Grail's history. He brings to light the earliest accounts of the Grail, as they were originally inscribed in Greek, Vedic and Celtic myths.

Description:
Who were the Illuminati and who are they now? Take Robert Howell s severe wake up call if you value your liberty and privacy and join the battle to protect counterculture before it is too late. Governments, dictators and religious leaders have clung to power via force or manipulation throughout history. But secret societies have grown, working in the shadows for the emancipation of humanity. The Illuminati formed in 1776 among European Freemasons and academics with the intent of liberating humanity from physical, mental and spiritual bondage. Despite a brief incarnation, their ideologies clashed with the established political and religious elite and they perfectly encapsulated the ethos of counterculture ideas possibly more relevant today than ever. The term Illuminati has since become usurped by the idea of a New World Order, but their principles live on through counterculture and the connected communities of the internet age. Hacktivists and cultural movements like Anonymous and Wikileaks wage war…

Description:
It appears to the writer that there is urgent need of more "nature books"-books that are scraped clear of fiction and which display only the carefully articulated skeleton of fact. Hence this little volume, presented with some hesitation and more modesty. Various chapters have, at intervals, appeared in the pages of various publications. The continued narrative is now published for the first time; and the writer trusts that it may inspire enthusiasm for natural and scientific research, and inculcate a passion for accurate observation among the young.

Description:
Pocket - sized book outlining information of the legendary King Arthur, with photographs of places of interest and items associated with the myth. King Arthur is the favourite of romantics and the bane of critical historians. There will never be absolute proof of his existence, for our main sources are more or less deliberate fictions, but there is enough to suggest for most a hidden truth and quite enough to inspire, from the Dark Ages to the present day.
Over the centuries the story of Arthur has been embellished and re-told, from medieval romances to Pre-Raphaelite painters to twentieth-century Hollywood. And yet the kernel of the story of a remarkable leader who inspired a devoted following has remained constant through the ages. But who was Arthur? Was he man or myth?
This handy, pocket-sized, hardback biography answers these questions and provides the ideal introduction in words and pictures to Arthur, his life and the places where his remarkable spirit can perhaps be felt even today.
