An examination of how the Singapore Government has developed its own successful brand of leadership in managing the interaction between policy, execution and culture, both existing and aspirational. Description:
Petaling Jaya, Malaysia: SIRD, 2010. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. Some of the survivors of the University Socialist Club, publishers of the Fajar magazine, recount their experiences as the standard bearers of the intellectual left in the Singapore of the 1950s and 1960s. They championed democracy, social justice and multiculturalism in a radical new Malayan state. They survived an attempt by the British to ban the publication in 1954, but succumbed to banning by the Government of Singapore in 1963. Ironically that Government was headed by Lee Kuan Yew, who, as Harry Lee, was a lawyer for 'The Fajar 8' at their trial in 1954. Very Good First Edition 328 pages with an index. Weight: 1 kg. Lexington, Mass, USA: Lexington Books, 1974. First edition. Hardcover. Good+. This interesting study was carried out in Singapore shortly after the Malaysian ethnic disturbances of 1969. The author seeks to examine the moral bond that ideally exists between the state and its citizens in order to make government work. How is this achieved in the more difficult circumstances of a racially mixed state where one race may be dominant? How is this legitimacy maintained when there is racial tension? The author tackles all these issues in the Singapore of the time, a more fragile state than it is now. 157 pages including several figures and tables, notes and an index. The book's chapters include 1 - Introduction, 2 - Singapore's Past and Present, 3 - The Causes of Legitimacy, 4 - The Causes of Ethnic Hostility, 5 - People and Politics, 6 - An Analysis of Public Policy, 7 - From a Little Country to a Large Theory. Description:
Singapore: NUS Press, 2017. Paperback. New. Although Singapore's economic success has brought the country into prominence, not only in Southeast Asia, but globally, probably few of the economy's overseas cheerleaders realise the extent to which this success is based on a challenge to Western liberal economic thinking. In this book the author traces the evolution of the three bases of the country's communitarian ideology - public housing, multiracialism and state capitalism - and their role in Singapore's transformation. He also looks at how the death of Lee Kuan Yew and the end of the Cold War have affected this development and how the dominant PAP Government has responded. 223 pages.
