Orange card covers lettred in black and with tipped on color plate. 92 full color plates printed versos only, plus index at rear. Boards with light even soiling, slightly rounded corners. The inside of both covers as well as the facing tile page and rear blank are heavily foxed otherwise the interior plates are clean and bright. Reproduced are original works in full color by noted wildlife artists Allan Brooks, George Miksch Sutton, Walter Alois Weber, Walter John Breckinridge, Francis Lee Jaques and Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Both early editiions of this collection (1936 and 1937) are extremely scarce.

Correct first edition, in one volume, with 1871 date on title page and no other editions noted, but apparently a later issue with the advert section dated 1883. A solidly very good or somewhat better example, gilt spine lettering bright, minor wear at the extremities, small light stains bottome edge of the text block, ownerrship signature dated 1895 front free endpaper.

Engraved chapter title pages and chapter headers with tissue guards. A tight, internally clean example, rubbing and scuffing to the leather. A classic work on American roses by an author most known for his historical books. With sections the Culture of The Rose (ope air, potted, propagation, miscellaneous operations; Decriptions of the rose with subsections on 17 varieties of the summer rose and 12 of the autumn rose.

The authors were, respectively, the pathologist and entomologist of the Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station at Lafayette, Indiana. Very good.
