Incline Railway, Manitou, Colorado, Souvenir Stamps And Old Photos of a Farm

By Not Applicable

Manitou, CO: Unknown. Good. 1907. Ephemera. Very small souvenir "pictures" with perforated edges like the large commemorative postage stamps. These were pasted inside an old photo album containing old photos of a farm. More commonly called simply the "Manitou Incline," the Mount Manitou Scenic Incline Railway -- actually a funicular up the side of a peak called Rocky Mountain located adjacent to Mount Manitou -- was operated by the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway until the Incline was closed by a rockslide in 1990. This line's lower terminus was adjacent to the Cog Railway base station in Manitou Springs. The Manitou Incline was initially built in 1907 for use in construction of city water lines and a hydroelectric plant. When the construction was finished, the Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway took over the cable car as a tourist operation. 12 stamps, 17 old photos in loose black pages. The actual album is long gone. ; Oblong 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 8 pages; 21957 .

People Of The Book, A Novel

By Brooks, Geraldine

Viking. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2008. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. 067001821X . One of the earliest Jewish religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the Sarajevo Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its turbulent journey. In the hands of Hanna Heath, an impassioned rare-book expert restoring the manuscript in 1996 Sarajevo, it yields clues to its guardians and whereabouts: an insect wing, a wine stain, salt crystals, and a white hair. While readers experience crucial moments in the book's history through a series of fascinating, fleshed-out short stories, Hanna pursues its secrets scientifically, and finds that some interests will still risk everything in the name of protecting this treasure. A complex love story, thrilling mystery, vivid history lesson, and celebration of the enduring power of ideas, People of the Book will surely be hailed as one of the best of 2008. --Mari Malcolm. Endpapers show The Global Journey of the Sarajevo Haggadah, as imagined in this book. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 368 pages; 31626 .
