John B. Alden, New York: 1884., 1884 215p. + Plus portrait frontis. Slight foxing and age stain. Small 8vo. Original full green cloth binding, gold decorated and lettered. Rubbed at extremities. Major-General Charles George Gordon (1833 1885), also known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum, was a British Army officer and administrator. He saw action in the Crimean War as an officer in the British Army. However, he made his military reputation in China, where he was placed in command of the "Ever Victorious Army", a force of Chinese soldiers led by European officers which was instrumental in putting down the Taiping Rebellion, regularly defeating much larger forces. For these accomplishments, he was given the nickname "Chinese Gordon" and honours from both the Emperor of China and the British. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! AFRICA 3. Hardcover. Good.

Description:
The Mershon Company, New York: (1883), 1883 391p. 12mo. 190 mm. Original full purple embossed cloth binding. Gilt lettered spine. Hardbound. Very good. A famous 19th century book. Much of the book is clearly autobiographical, and interestingly, two leading characters, Lyndall and Waldo, are taken to be two sides of the author herself. The story reflects her childhood upbringing and the landscape in South Africa where she worked as a governess on isolated farms during the late 19th century. This, her first book, was hailed as pathbraking by contemporary English feminists. Scarce early American Edition. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! AFRICA/3 Language: eng. Full Cloth. Hardcover.. Very Good.

Description:
Tribune Job Printing Co., Salt Lake City : 1893, 1893 283 p. 8vo. 23 cm. Original blue cloth biding, lettered in gold, with a decorative Greek key border in black. Slightly worn at head and tail. The author was a newspaperman and the editor of the Salt L ake City Tribune. His style is a curious blend of the journalistic with the romantic. The scenes move easily between the Comstock Lode, England, and the mines of South Africa. The Comstock Lode was the group of celebrated silver and gold mines near Virginia City, Nevada. Between 1859-1870 it yielded well over 300 million tons of valuable ore. The profits made from the Lode accounted for much of the economic growth of the West in the late 19th century. Wright, American Fiction III (1876-1900), 2206. "The lust of gold, unfeeling and remorseless! The last corruption of degenerate man" -- Samuel Johnson (1749). **PRICE JUST REDUCED!
