1851 pps 1410/432 with many woodblock illustrations. Text in German. Heavy, leather over wood boards with 5 metal pips protruding from the front and rear covers (to protect the leather covers from wear) and 2 clasps, with leather ties which are broken and/or missing. Nicely aged, good condition.

Internal condition Very Good with a contemporary inscription dated 1860 adorning the first blank, quite long in content.

Boston: Mcdonald Gill and Company, 1889 Later printings changed the title to add 'According to' and omit 'by'. Original brown cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Excellent 'Near Fine' condition with a bit of wear to the spine ends and cover corners. No interior writing or damage. Research verifies that this is the only example on the net for sale of the original hardcover first edition at this time, however there are several copies at Seminary and University libraries in the USA.

Oblong 4to, (18" x 12") 3/4 leather with five raised bands and decorated compartments, titles in gilt. Plates in 3 untitled (Hell, Purgatory & Paradise assumed) sections, 1-38, 1-38, 1-33 for a total of 109 captioned plates. Light to moderate wear, a bit of old moisture staining and foxing though none into image areas confined to edge margins. Quite nice frameable plates.

Some very old ink transfer to the title page along the vertical, likely from an old page inserted with fresh fountain pen ink, just a bit, very light. 16 printed pages. NOTE we also have the Second edition of this scarce booklet printed in 1874 in Toledo.

Fletcher a popular writer and preacher in Littleton and Laconia, NH from the 1930's untill the 1970's. Also included is a newspaper clipping announcing his new position in Laconia. Blanks & end papers are mostly clean with 1 signed gift inscription in the front matter and a statement in pen on the front cover from Heman Chase (noted author of RR books) from ALstead. Also contains the Appendix of the History of Alstead from 1826 to 1836, 12 pages. Salma Hale is also mentioned. Quite scarce in this first printing.

Some damage to the front cover upper spine corner and several pages stained in same area. Once folded in 1/2 with light center creasing. 16 numbered pages + covers, all with text. Many opinions of working and travelling on the railroads on Sunday (Sabbath) are discussed herein. This is the second document to discuss these questions, the first, published in 1858 (Document #2) by this publisher.
