264 pages with diagrams, tables, photographic plates, bibliography and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial cover. First edition. The international Tournament in cologne in 1898 was one of the few significant tournaments held by the German Chess Association about which the usual tournament volume - the Kongressbuch, was not published. All the other congresses of the Deutscher Schachbund (except the one in Elsenach 1896, which, however, was of local importance only and did not have international status) have been adequately documented in chess literature. This book includes descriptions of the play taken from newspapers and chess magazines of the time together with 54 of the 128 games played, crosstable, photographs, biographies and tournament records of the participants and a brief look at the minor tournaments played alongside the main congress. The main tournament was won by Amos Burn ahead of Charousek, Cohn, Chigorin, Steinitz and Schlecter. Condition: Light edge… Read More

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:2211) Second edition.Henri Rinck was a French chess study composer, considered one of the most important early figures in the field. He was born in Lyon (France) on January 10, 1870, where his family were brewers (Brasserie Rinck). He graduated as a chemical engineer at the Technische Hochschule of Munich (Germany). He then worked at the Faculte des Sciences in Lyon as an assistant of Dr. Barbier. In 1897 he discovered a refining process for green vegetable oils, which was applied in Marseille (France), then by several olive oil refineries in Spain. In 1900 he set up a factory in Badalona (Spain) and lived there with his family. Before the end of the Spanish civil war he had to leave Spain. He established himself in Marseille, but returned to Spain later. His first chess endgame studies… Read More

First edition.16th Olympiad was the first ever to be held in Asia; it also attracted a new record number of participants. The chosen representatives of fifty countries entered for the event, among them a team from the green continent, Australia. Thus for the first time in the history of the Chess Olympiads players from all five continents were able to take part in a world gathering. As many as 294 players took part, among them more then 70 titled players. This was first Olympiad to be held as late as in November because of specific Israeli climate, with high temperatures even during autumn months. Lovely beaches nearby, very good organization and perfect air-conditioning inside luxurious halls of Sheraton assured great conditions of play. Because of growing number of participants the teams were divided into six groups of 7, and one group of 8. Only two top teams of each group… Read More

71 pages with illustrations, photographs and tables. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") issued in wrappers. (Lusis: 1537) First edition.Includes notes on the players and an opening survey. 66 games with annotations and commentary. This was a Zonal tournament, in which the top three finishers, Sammy Reshevsky, William Addison and Pal Benko qualified for the 1970 Interzonal in Palma de Mallorca. By failing to play in this US Championship, Bobby Fischer apparently gave up all hope of playing in the 1972 World Championship, to which the Interzonal was the first stepping stone. Why Fischer refused to play and how he got in anyway is therefore, a tale worth recounting. Bobby Fischer had both played for, and won the US Championship 8 times, usually by hefty margins, and along the way had racked up an eye-popping record of +61-3=26 (by an amazing coincidence, Sammy Reshevsky had an identical +61-3=26 record after 90 US Championship tournament games, not counting his match with Horowitz or his playoff vs. Kashdan. 46 pages with tables and diagrams. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/23") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. First edition. With the reverberations of the Fischer Boom still resounding in their ears, the Powers That Were in USCF-Land decided it might be time to move the US Closed Championship out of New York where it had been played exclusively since 1936 (except for the small blip of South Fallsburg, 1948). As always, the issue was funding, but the El Paso Chess Club (with the help of the local Jaycees and the Hotel Paso del Norte) got everything together and brought together the following group from September 9-26, 1973, for a little chess and a trip or two across the border to Juarez for the dog races: Pal Benko; Arthur Bisguier; Walter Shawn Browne; Donald Byrne; Larry Melvyn Evans; Lawrence C Gilden; John A Grefe; George Francis Kane; Andrew Karklins; Lubomir Kavalek; William E Martz; Edmar J Mednis; James Tarjan. The 21st Chess Olympiad, organized by FIDE and comprising an open team tournament, as well as several other events designed to promote the game of chess, took place between June 6 and June 30, 1974, in Nice, France. Bobby Fischer was still the reigning World Champion, but had not played a single game of tournament chess since he won the title in 1972 and was not present in Nice either. However, the American team still managed to secure third place in his absence. For the same reason, for the second time in a row, the Soviet team was not led by the current world champion. It did, however, feature three previous (Tal, Petrosian, and Spassky) as well as one future champion (Karpov). (Lusis: 1890) First edition. The 1980 United States Closed Chess Tournament was held at Thiel College. This championship was sharply defined by the battle between two chess generations, that of the forties and that of the Fischer era of the late sixties and early seventies. Bisguier, Byrne and Evans met the new stars, Browne, Christiansen and Seirawn. The old guard held its own. Also this tournament saw the participation of three russian emigres, who had expressed their intention of remaining in this country. Mark Diesen suffered a bad fall after the third round, and after treatment at Greenville hospital was forced to withdraw and his score was not considered in the results. The contest ended in a three way tie for first place with Larry Evans, Walter Browne and Larry Chistiansen with +7 1/2. closely… Read More
