A must-read for western lovers and for every one who loves writing with the ring of authenticity -- artful - and signed by Kelton.

Elmer Kelton is credited with the cartoons which accompany the story by Paul Patterson, Kelton's teacher and friend. Kelton's foreward explains why he pursued writing rather than art: economics! This is the 1994 paperback reprint of Mathis, Van Nort & Co.'s 1947 edition. Bright, crisp, tight and clean - with tan wrapper and black print. Rear top corner has light creasing, and other corners have very minor wear. 183 pp. Fun as Elmer's cartoons are, we're grateful that his journalism and fiction career took off and that we were gifted with the powerful and authentic characters that people his novels!

Spine ends have fraying and a little chipping. Front panel shows white rubbing on illustration by Vito de Vito. Spine shows very slight discoloration, and rear panel has a few light rubbing marks. Top edge of front panel has darkening and rubbing on edges and front hinge. Top front corner has wear as do corners of first few pages. Page 35 has impression of paper clip on top margin, and bottom corner of rear free end paper has slight warping from dampness. Rear panel of dust jacket has light creasing on corners. Text block is clean.

These are his short stories and a novelette published by the Fort Concho Museum Press in Kelton's home town of San Angelo, TX. Signed by Kelton on front free end paper and inscribed to previous owners, whose label is on front paste-down page. Cloth boards are clean, book is tight and crisp. Dust jacket has price intact. A classic tale, as are all his, of ranching, challenges and change. 373 pp. This is a crisp and bright copy with dark golden linen boards. There is very slight edgewear to corners and spine ends. Bottom page edge has light foxing - Clean and tight interior without marking of any kind. Dust jacket is bright with golden background - has price of $6.95 intact but penciled through. Corners have light wear, while spine ends have light creasing and wear. Hinges show slight rubbing wear. Light background of back panel shows a little dark rubbing and some red smears.
