London: John Boydell, 1781. Two volumes rebound as one in 2 of the original gilt-tooled leather-covered boards with new leather spine upon which the 2 original leather spines have been laid down--makes for an interesting and attractive "original" binding. There are 150 copperplate engraved plates after the drawings by Paul Sandby and accompanying text. We have been able to locate only two other copies for sale at this time, and one is the 1783 reprint.  Very good condition: clean and tight, with some edgewear and rubbing of leather; pages are clean and bright watermarked laid paper with slight toning at the edges.  There is no staining on the plates--not in the images, not in the margins. Pentonville (London): George Cruikshank, 1837. 24mo. 2nd edition, with the 1836 date on the front cover and 1837 hiding in a background poster on the rear cover. Published as a paperback with black and white engraved covers and 24 hand-colored engraved plates on a single sheet folded accordion style. This example was rebound in full brown leather during the 19th century by Pomey, who has been described variously as a noted Parisian bookbinder or as an English binder. Both covers are intricately tooled in gilt & black and feature gilt letters of the alphabet around the borders. Covers are bound in. Everything about this book shouts that it is the work of famed British caricaturist George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Ostensibly a children's book (like most alphabet books), its themes, language, even the jokes clearly are aimed at adults. Drexelius was professor of humanities and rhetoric at Augsburg and Dillengen as well as court preacher to the Elector of Bavaria. CONSIDERATIONS ON ETERNITY was probably his most significant book. This translation, which was published in multiple 18th and 19th century editions, is by Samuel Dunster, Prebendary of Sarum & chaplain to Lord Maynard and later Vicar of Rochdale. Amsterdam: Chez Zacharie Chatelain, 1728. Complete in 5 parts (various paginations) with frontispiece and 242 half-page engravings by Henri Cause, many based on those of François Chauveau. There also are attractiveengraved tailpieces following many of the fables. The 5th part of the Fables is not included in many editions; so this more complete edition is quite desirable. Recently and sympathetically rebound in full leather with the original spine and front & rear panels laid down. Internally clean with only an occasional hint of foxing; small chips out of margins of 5 leaves, not affecting text or images. The frontispiece is an original etching pencil-signed by Schaldach. William Joseph Schaldach (1896-1982) was a writer on art and outdoor sporting, editor for Field and Stream, and most notably an important American wildlife artist. The book offered here is beautifully bound in full vellum with a gilt vignette of a trout rising to a mayfly on the front cover. In addition to the original art of the frontispiece, there are 60 full-page reproductions of Schaldach's fish art. Parallel text in both French and English. Both the printed French title page and the engraved English title page are present. All engravings were engraved by James Newton, from drawings by Barbut. James Barbut was an English artist and naturalist, who was an admirer of the work of Carl Linnaeus. The Natural History Museum, London holds 126 of the watercolors by Barbut that he painted for this book. The book is in about very good condition: the color engravings are clean and bright, with some minimal offsetting limited to the one folding plate; text pages are clean and supple, with minimal foxing, the spine leather is stripped, and boards are supported by the binding cords.. Harper's Weekly was the most important American pictorial newspaper in the 19th century.
