Loweel,: Ayer,, 1898.. 32 pp. Small 8vo (12,5 x 19,5 cm.). Original printed wrappers. With numerous illustrations. Ayer's Sarsaparilla, Cherry Pectoral and his other nostrums. The first issue of this almanac was published in 1847, the last in 1911. The patent medicine almanac was a sort of informal textbook for educating the American people. No other printed sources, except the Bible, were issued in such large editions. See Young, Toadstool Millionaires p. 138-140.

With some illustrations. ¶ The famous Burdock Blood Bitters advertisement booklet for 1889. Almanac with on the alternate pages the description of the various diseases BBB could be the panacea, and testimonies of its users. Very nicely illustrated cover. See Carson p 12 & 79.

"Wine of Cardui" for Women and "Black-Draught"for all, became virtual folk remedies, and have remained so for almost a century. Wine of Cardui is an alcoholic nostrum sold as the "Woman's Tonic". It contained no wine but 20% alcohol per volume, a small amount of the extractives of Cardus benedictus and Viburnum prunifolium (both of non medical value).

San Gabriel,: E.E. Clark,, (n.d., ca. 1920).. one folio leave (35 x 22 cm.), twice folded. In this catalog Clark offered about 250 formulas, tests, prescriptions & medical treatments. "With one or more of these formulas, a profitable business can be established. Several nation-wide concerns had their beginning in the home kitchen less than 10 years ago, and fortunes were made".

Buffalo,: R.V. Pierce,, 1871... 24 pp. Small 8vo (13,5 x 20 cm.). Original illustrated (wood engraving) wrappers. I.a. Pierce's "Snake Oil all purpose medicine". Early Pierce publications like this one are rare. Dr. Pierce is unquestionable the most successful American quack, from finacial point of view, who have poisoned countless Americans with their harmful "medicines". For futher reading see A.J. Philadelphia,: Starkey & Palen,, 1883.. [ii], 182, 6, ii blank]; 12, i] pp. 12 mo (10 x 14.5 cm.). Original illustrated limp boards (partly slightly stained and discoloured). With 2 wood engraved portraits (Starkey & Palen and 5 wood engraved plates. A detailed description of Starkey's Compound Oxygen with directions for using. The last 16 pages have a separate title: Hygienic Hints to Health seekers, while using the Compount Oxygen treatment by G.R. Starkey. 7the edition. A fine example 19th century American medical (quackish) advertisement. Starkey's Compound Oxygen is presented as the universal panacea.--(Small stain in the outer margin of the first 3 leaves).

St Helens,: Th. Beecham,, 1893.. 20 pp. 12mo (10 x 14 cm.). Original printed wrappers (slightly stained). Beecham's Pills have been sold for some years in Great Britain where they are advertised under the slogan, "Worth a Guinea a Box". B.F. Allen Co was the sole agent for the U.S.A, who sold a box for 25 cent. Analyses by the BMA showed that the Beecham Pills consist of aloes, ginger and soap. The ingredients of a box of these pills cost a quarter of a cent. Indeed, "What need of Aladdin's lamp when we can build a palace with a patent pill" (James Russell Lowel).

Schenck's bestselling nostrums were Seaweed Tonic, Mandrake Pills and Pulmonic Syrup, the latter a remedy diseases of the lungs contained 96,4% sugars (Cramp p. 104 for the full analysis).

Monticello: Pepsin Syrup Company,, (n.d., ca. 1915).. 32 pp. Small 8vo (12 x 17 cm.).Original illustrated wrappers. With several portraits. Fine clean copy. Cadwell's Syrup Pepsin,the perfect laxative. Added: A letter in type-script on the Pepsin Syrup Company's stationery inviting the recipient to obtain a free sample bottle of this nostrum. The original coupon is preserved.

Philadelphia,: D. Jaynes,, 1925.. 32 pp. Small 4to (15 x 18 cm.). Original printed wrappers (spine damaged; a few minute tears; vulnerable). With some text illustrations. In 1843 Jayne published his first almanac. One of his most popular remedies was his Expectorant, an habit-forming nostrum (alcohol and opium) which was harmful to children. One case of the dead of a child reported (see Cramo p. 455).

Original illustrated chromolithographed wrappers (some light scattered spots; small tear in the lower margin of the rear site; small piece gone from the outer cornerfs of rea site). Advertisement booklet for the Indian Root Pills, being a cook book with on the alternate pages the description of the disease the pills cures.--(worm hole in the blank portion lower part of the outer margin). New York,: Heumann,, (n.d., ca. 1915).. 24 pp. 8vo (13 x 20,5 cm.). Original printed wrappers. Illustrated. According to the preface, Pfarrer heumann'schen Mittel were available in all larger German apothecaries, and the had received over the last 20 years "über 250,000 Dankschreiben". Some of their nostrums: Nerosol Pills, Condurol, Oleatol Pills, Herb Tea, Cystonol tablets, Bulusol pills, Rimagot tablets, etc. With the usual testimonies.

New York,: Lamber Snyder,, ( n.d. ca. 1910).. 4 pp. Flyer, 9,4 x 15,5 pp. With 2 illustrations. A folded advertisement sheet for the portable Exhilarator and a brief introduction regarding exhilaration by means of vibration. The company claimed: "There is only one disease - Congestion", "There is only one cure - Circulation".
