He instituted the principle of uterine drainage, placing his patients in a sitting position shortly after delivery using a special bed and chair (both depicted in this work). White was also the first after Hippocrates to make any substantial contributions towards the solution of the aetiology and management of puerperal fever". A nice copy of this rare work.

Paris,: Jean-Thomas Herissant, Imprimeur du Roi,, 1765.. iv, [5]-134, [ii blank], 7, [i blank] pp. Small 8vo (12,5 x 19,5 cm.). Finely rebound in half marbled calf (antique style), spine gilt lettered on red morocco label, marbled boards and new endpapers, red edges. A fine copy of this rare obstetrical polemic. The last 7 pages are: "Mémoire a consulter Pour les Héritiers de la Veuve de Charles...". "Bouvart, physician and doctor regent of the faculty of Paris, and associate-veteran of the Academy of Science, was born a Chartres. Many of his ancestors having been physicians, he determined on the same profession, which he practised at Paris with so much success that no other physician was more consulted; yet this did not prevent him being jealous of Tronchin, Bordeu, and some others, of whom he spoke very illiberally, but he was a man otherwise of great kindness and benevolence. One anecdote is recorded as characteristic. A banker, who had experienced some heavy losses,…

Description:
Haarlem,: Johannes Marshoorn,, 1735 (=1727).. [ii blank], [xvi], 518, [iv blank] pp. Small 8vo (11 x 16,5 cm.). Full contemporary vellum. Title printed in red and black. One of the rarest of all Dutch 18th century obstetrical books. Worldwide there are only 4 copies in library holdings (NLM, UBA, UBL & UBU), and haven't been offered for sale for decades. First, posthumously, published in 1727, this "tweden druk" is nothing more than a remainder of the sheets of the 1727 edition with a new title-page, dated 1735. Because of the great rarity of this work, its importance have been ignored by most of the historians of obstetrics (i.a. von Siebold). Johannes Huwé was born at Haarlem, promoted MD at Groningen in 1699. As a pupil of Van Deventer, he devoted most of his life to Obstetrics. He was the FIRST to consider the mechanism of labor from a dynamic and mathematics point of view (i.a. pelvimetry, inclination of the pelvis and uterus, measurement of the scull and lower…
