Description:
Heritage Books. New. 1993. Trade Paperback. This work opens with an overview of Black Hawk’s birth in 1767 and his growth, nothing that he was not a chief but a brave. When his father died, Black Hawk inherited his medicine bag, “with its attendant responsibility”. The bulk of the book describes his place in American history. During the 1830’s Andrew Jackson’s administration pursued a policy of forcing all eastern Indians to move west of the Mississippi River. As part of this effort a treaty of dubious merits was negotiated by the government with certain members of the Saux and Fox tribes by which they ceded to the U.S. 50 million acres of their land comprising the northwestern half of Illinois, and much of southwestern Wisconsin and eastern Missouri. Chief Black Hawk denied the validity of the treaty, and attempted to take back the land by force which resulted in the Black Hawk War of April-August 1832. The Indians were defeated, and many of Black Hawk’s… Read More

Description:
Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company. New. 1998. Hardcover. Index. . 189 pages. World War I has passed from living memory into the history books, receding far enough into the distance to provide a genealogical challenge. In order to reconstruct the lives and locate the records of those who served, fought, volunteered, or were conscripted, we must rely on a vast but relatively unknown body of resources. Counting all combatants, the number of men who served in the Great War runs into the millions; needless to say, finding records on them in the two dozen countries that participated in the war is a daunting and laborious task--now made infinitely simpler with the publication of this magnificent guide to WWI service records. The only book of its kind, this ambitious effort to catalogue service records and related sources is international in scope, covering the soldiers of all countries participating in the war, from Britain, Germany, and France, to Russia, Canada, and the U. S. ; and… Read More

Description:
New York: John Wiley & Sons. New. 1999. Trade Paperback. Index. . 239 pages. This highly acclaimed eyewitness account of the Civil War at sea provides fascinating insights into command decisions made on the bridge as well as life below deck. Recently discovered in the Library of Congress archives, this memoir was written just after the Civil War by John Grattan, an ensign in the Union navy who witnessed some of the war's most significant naval operations. Under the editorship of acclaimed naval historian Robert Schneller, Grattan's account of the crucial struggle for control of the Atlantic seaboard bristles with the tension of combat. With sharply etched details of blockade running, guerrilla warfare, fierce underwater battles, the brutal advance on Richmond, and visits to the front lines by President Abraham Lincoln, this rare memoir includes personal observations of key naval and military leaders and rescues less-celebrated heroes from obscurity. Sparkling with Victorian… Read More
