Frontispiece Engraving. l'Academie de Blois (de Petigny), Blois, 1835 and Imprimerie de Felix Jauyer. Wrappers. 12mo., 72 pp. Collation complete. In French [one page in Latin]. A strange and oddly precious paperback production from 1835, written anonymously by a member of l'Academie de Blois, on the origins of the word "cuckold". Avec des Notes et Pieces Justificatives Par un Membre de L'Academie de de Blois [De Petigny] Augmente de Origine du Cocuange. First Edition with all first state points, those being - on Jacket: James Jones blurb instead of Nelson Algren's at bottom of back panel; $ 5.00 price; code 0464, bottom of front flap. Book: purple cloth, black paper boards; no statement of printing (later editions do state printing); 5.75" x 8.25", 224 pp.; red endpapers and topstain as per first issue. Near fine in near fine jacket; very close to fine, which is scarce for this title in the first state. One of the better copies you're likely to see of this inexpensively produced title. Jacket is first state and not clipped, still bearing the $ 5.00 price. First edition of the somewhat tardy American re-do of Southern's original (under the pseudonym Maxwell Kenton)through the Olympia Press in Paris in 1958 -which was itself chased and marked for destruction by French authorities.…

Paris: Olympia Press 1958, 1958. First Edition . Printed Wrappers. Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Paris: Olympia Press, 1958. First edition. 12mo, green perfect-bound wrappers, 189 pp. Near Fine; touch peripheral wear. Please see scans. Bearing the later price overstamp. Scarce first edition - if you're here, you know the story of the bannings, burnings, and later pirate and non-pirate editions. The story of a naive and gorgeous young blonde girl - who quickly finds out in exactly what way we men are all, instantly and always, the same - borrows its plot structure from Voltaire's Candide and uses that strangely juxtaposed vehicle to shine a light on all the vagaries of modern western life which beg to be lampooned. Considered by many, then and now, to be a classic of "black (dark) humor". In 2006, Playboy Magazine included Candy on its list of the "25 Sexiest Novels Ever Written". Handsome and rare specimen of a title that is en…

unknown: Unknown, 1885. Soft cover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. (Place not known) Japan, circa 1885, by our estimate; possibly as early as 1827, by others. Octavo, 17 pp, light brown wraps, wraps and pages probably of rice paper. Stitched binding. Creasing of covers, some peripheral wear, some apparent light soiling to covers. About very good. Text in Japanese; therefore I'm unsure of the exact vintage or character of this piece - but it is striking in its two pages of hand-colored illustrations of what are apparently erotic apparatus articles for sale. A singular piece for the erotica collector. Please see scans. L38n

Dortmund: Die Bilbiophilen Taschenbucher, 1983. Pictorial Wraps. Fine. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Dortmund: Die BibliophilenTaschenbucher, 1983. IN GERMAN AND FRENCH. Erotica. 16mo., 6.5" x 4.75". Blue wraps with illustration pastedown on front cover. Unpaginated. Minute edgewear, else fine. A collection of full color erotica, taken from 19th century French miniature lithographs, showing "libertines" of that era engaged in all sorts of...sports. Though vintage in nature, these are all a little too HC for presenting scans here, the cover image (which see) being pretty much the only one suitable for that. Although the book was produced in Germany [being installment #149 in Die Bibliophilen Taschenbucher's aggregation of similar offerings] and has a bit of text in German, the lithographs reproduced all have short French captions - my personal favorite being "L'asperge a la sauce blanche" ["Asparagus with white…

Description:
Dunellen, NJ: Gay Book, Incorporated, 1936. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Fair. Just Fair; see description and scans. Dunellen, NJ: Gay Book, Incorporated, 1936. Enoch Bolles cover. The November, 1936 issue of Gay Book, a classic - and scarce - 30s pulp publication of the type typically sought out by traveling gentlemen. Quarto, staple-bound wraps, 64 pp. Fair, and just barely that; soil and stains over much of both covers, numerous perimeter chips, including a large one at back cover, covers loose. See scans. Nonetheless, complete, and, as a year 1936 issue, quite scarce. All the standard girlie photos and cartoons, throughout the 64 pages - see sample scans - that defined this genre. This copy is in rough shape, though, and is collectible only for the cover art by the remarkable Enoch Bolles (see scan of corner signature), and its scarcity as a 1936 issue, of which few seem to have survived. Classic pulp americana. See scans. LPR13
