Description:
434 pages. Solid and clean, a little age-darkening, a little foxing and a few light stains on a few early pages; binding slightly cocked, front hinge just starting. This is the second state of the first printing, because the word transposition on pg. 419, line 14 has been corrected, and the copyright date of 1921 is on the copyright page only; no other printing stated. This book was part of a variety-store lending library back when such things existed, and bears the store's bookplate on the flyleaf.Tarkington won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice, once for The Magnificent Ambersons (1919) and once for Alice Adams (1922). Although mostly forgotten today, he was considered America's greatest novelist during his lifetime, on a par with Mark Twain, led best-seller lists and had many of his novels made into movies, such as Alice Adams by George Stevens in 1935 and The Magnificent Ambersons by Orson Welles in 1942,

Volume is tight, solid and complete; no fraying of spine head or heel, no marks of any kind, all pages tight, bright and complete. Boards are semiflexible cardboard. A little age-darkening, 3 corners slightly bumped. Has "BRAZ, M." and "X45" stenciled in white on front board.Issued to US Navy enlisted personnel since 1902, and a direct successor to manuals produced before literacy was widespread among enlisted personnel, this volume is the complete guide to all aspects of a career in the Navy: Navy life, work, regulations, knots, seamanship, gunnery, landings, arms, squad and platoon schools, and so on.
This edition is of particular interest because it was issued just before the start of World War II and depicts the state of the navy one year before Pearl Harbor.

Front hinge a little weak, some age-darkening, spine fading, a little foxing, some soiling of boards, previous owners' names. All pages intact, clean, bright and unmarked.A first edition of the first of Gene Stratton-Porter's best-selling books set in the (formerly) famous 13,000 acre Limberlost swamp in Adams and Jay counties in Indiana. Once a major wildlife and nature preserve, the swamp was drained and gone by 1910. About 10% has been restored, today, known as the Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve. An icon of turn-of-the-previous century Indiana, Stratton-Porter was one of the best-selling authors of her day, a naturalist and environmental activist who tried to save the Limberlost and other wetlands, a nature photographer, and a silent film-era producer who founded her own production company, Gene Stratton Porter Productions, in 1924.Freckles is the story of an orphan who earns his way into society through courage and perseverance. In the course of the story, Stratton-Porter describes the…

Description:
Upper corner of front cover shows a fold mark; binding and pages solid, tight and unmarked. Includes Robert Montgomery's obituary from the New York Times under pastedown, which left a slight shadow on flyleaf. From J.H. Heineman's "Open Letter" series, which was, according to the Foreword, "...conceived and developed as the platform for an international assembly of prominent people and established writers to discuss, dissect and delve into contemporary ideas and mores."
And:
"Each letter is a personal polemic in which the author appeals to the mind rather than to the emotions; and chides with the épée rather than bludgeons with the hammer."
The best summary of the work comes from Robert Montgomery's own Foreword: "This is an ill-tempered book, but not, I hope, one the reader will think merely polemic. The anger which inspires it is not an end in itself. It is intended to awaken in the television viewer some conception of the dangers inherent in the free-wheeling oligopoly which dominates the mass… Read More

Vol 128 of the Memoirs. First edition.Moderate tanning of spine and slight tanning mark on front cover, very small imperfection on head of spine; otherwise unmarked, undamaged, and virtually as new, apparently never been opened.Prof. Jones's introduction and notes provide excellent context to this fascinating series of letters from pioneering American physician Jonathan Warren, probably the first to administer anesthetic during pediatric surgery and a leader in reconstructive surgery techniques. He studied in Paris with the leading medical practitioners of the day, and his letters provide valuable information on the state of medicine at the time and on the development of American medicine in the years leading up to the American Civil War.

Title on spine is "Tisbury's Town and Proprietors' Records." One of 500 copies. Spine tanned, a little age darkening, small scratch and a little scuffing on bottom right of rear board but otherwise volume is complete, tight, unmarked and wholly sound. This unique work was meticulously deciphered, arranged and recorded over many years as a labor of love by William S. Swift (1861-1936), civil engineer and surveyor and longtime town clerk of Vineyard Haven, and Jennie Cleveland, assistant town clerk. The Records provides an extraordinary look into the daily lives of Americans (who were not Americans when these records began) from the 17th to the 19th century. It details the real-life problems, concerns, attitudes, and solutions that concerned America from colonial times to the Revolutionary War ("...the unhappy State of the Province in general and of Said County [Dukes] in Particular." p. 206) through to the Civil War, and provides insights into British colonial and American life unobtainable elsewhere.…

Description:
A little foxing, age-soiling, a loose hinge, one loose page. The last 16 pages are of Henry Altemus Company catalogue advertising. The author's name is actually Moore, misprinted in earlier editions. This format was part of the Altemus Series 58 "Boys and Girls Classics" (No. 91), printed between 1899 and 1906. This edition is among the early ones of the series, published in 1901, based on the presence of Sea Kings and the absence of Vic in the publisher's advertising section in the back of the book.
Vic, the life of a fox terrier told in his own "words," quickly became a classic upon publication, and is still read today; early editions are hard to find.

Memoirs of the American Philosophical Society, Volume 93.This volume is in new condition, with a 1 1/4" tear on top front of the dust jacket, a 1/2" tear and a water spot on the bottom front of the dust jacket (which does not penetrate to the front board of the book). A couple of small soil spots on dust jacket. Volume shows no bumping, tanning, marks of any kind, no bookplates, not an ex-library copy. (Note: what appear to be gray stains on pages on lower right of some photographs are shadows of our inept photographer.)This out-of-print classic work by arguably the greatest Mayanologist of the 20th century is the last volume of Thompson's three works on Mayan hieroglyphic writing. It is a standard text for students of Mayan writing, and while more knowledge has been gained in the 50 years since its publication, it remains a foundational work in the field.
