Rachmaninov's first one-act opera was written in 1893 while still a student at the Moscow Conservatory. The opera, with a libretto by Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko after a play by Alexander Pushkin, was given its premiere in May 1893 at Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre. Rachmaninov's characteristic writing is already apparent, complete with the colorful orchestration that was a hallmark of his compositional style. This score is a digitally enhanced reprint of the one first issued by Muzgiz (the USSR State Publisher) in the 1950s.

In the wake of Georges Bizet's untimely death in 1875, his longtime friend Ernest Guiraud (1837-1892) arranged two orchestral suites taken from the French master's final work, the opera Carmen. The two suites were compiled between 1880 and 1882. Guiraud selected five items for the first suite: Prélude, Aragonaise, Intermezzo, Les Dragons d'Acala and Final (Les Toreadors) which was published by the Paris firm Choudens. The first suite's orchestration little changed from that found in the corresponding numbers of the opera in Guiraud's score.

Around 1906, the German conductor Fritz Hoffmann orchestrated the Séguidille for the publication of his edition first suite by the Leipzig publisher Breitkopf und Härtel. Hoffmann's orchestral setting departs substantially from the composer's own orchestration in the opera. The Carnival Overture - second of the set of three concert overtures originally entitled as "Nature, Life and Love", followed fast on the heels of its predecessor. The original title of the overture was "Life" which was ultimately abandoned for the more poetic Karneval. Work started on July 28 and the piece was completed on September 12 of 1891. The first performance was given (along with its two companions) on April 28, 1892 in Prague's National Theatre with the composer conducting the resident orchestra.

The score offered here is a reissue of the 1955 critical edition of Frantisek Bartos and Antonin Cubr first published in the Dvorak complete works by the Czech state publishing concern. In contrast so many of the on-demand scores now available, this one comes with all the pages and the images have been thoroughly checked to make sure it is readable, is beautifully printed on off-white stock with a quality cover.

This is a new, digitally enhanced reissue of the score originally published in 1911 by Durand et Cie., Paris. Originally composed in 1910 for piano solo, Children's Corner was scored for small orchestra the next year by Debussy's student and good friend the composer André Caplet, who conducted the premiere in Boston. This is the orchestral setting most widely performed and recorded today. It is a brilliant example of early 20th century orchestral writing. Composed around 1815 and dedicated to Tsar Alexander I of Russia, Crusell's second concerto is one which takes full advantage of the two prominent registers of the instrument, which the minor-key first movement uses to heighten the dramatic nature of the music. The second movement, a pastorale-like Andante in the relative major, is followed by a return to F minor for the Rondo - which nevertheless ends in F major. The concerto was first published in 1818 and this first edition was the primary source for McAlister's newly engraved critical edition offered here - in a convenient reduced-format study score. Debussy orchestrated two of the three Gymnopedies composed by his friend Erik Satie after giving an impromptu performance of the piano originals at the home of conductor Gustave Doret, who was so taken with them that he commissioned Debussy to prepare an orchestral setting for an upcoming concert, which was given on Feb. 20, 1897. Though Satie's piano originals are easily his most famous and beloved work now, they were virtually unknown in 1897. Debussy's orchestration of the first and last, presented in reverse order, did much to establish the younger composer's reputation. This newly engraved, critical edition makes these exquistite orchestral miniatures available in an affordable, easy-to-read score for the first time.

Chabrier's orchestral showpiece was composed in 1883 and received its premiere in November of that year in Paris under the baton of Charles Lamoreaux, founder of the now famous orchestra bearing his name. Inspired by a vacation to Spain taken the year before its composition, Espana is a superb example of the Spanish-genre showpiece - featuring driving rhythms, brilliant orchestral colors and folk-derived melodies. Inspired by Canto V of the "Inferno" of Dante's "Divine Comedy", Tchaikovsky initially planned to create an opera on the subject but abandoned the idea in favor the present 24-minute fantasia for orchestra in 1876. Bearing all the hallmarks of the composer's late romantic style, "Francesca da Rimini" takes full advantage of the powerful orchestral forces employed. The first performance was given on March 9, 1877 in Moscow, with the RMS Orchestra conducted by Nikolay Rubinstein. This is a new, digitally enhanced reissue of the score originally published around 1900 in Leipzig by Ernst Eulenburg.

Originally for piano, Chabrier's Habanera was arranged for orchestra by the composer for a concert he conducted in Angers on November 4, 1888. The piano version was the first to be published (Enoch Frères et Costallat, 1885). The orchestral version, which is transposed up to D major, was not issued until 1889. The Habanera is a fine example of the Spanish genre which was so popular in the works of French composers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Richard W. Sargeant Jr's newly engraved is based upon the 1889 first edition score and parts, the composer's manuscript having vanished during the second world war. The study score offered here is a reduced format reproduction of the large conductor score which is also available along with the orchestral parts from Serenissima Music.

MacDowell composed his first symphonic poem in 1884 while living in Germany. Apparently it received its premiere there the next year, accompanied by publication. The US premiere did not take place until 1893, when the Boston Symphony performed the piece under the baton of Arthur Nikisch. This new score is a digitally enhanced reprint of the 1885 score issued by Julius Hainauer in Breslau.

Dedicated to the 'father of the to symphonic poem' Franz Liszt, Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia is a musical depiction of a caravan of Central Asians traveling through the steppe lands of the Caucasus under the protection of Russian troops. The premiere took place in St. Petersburg on April 20, 1880 with the Orchestra of the Russian opera under the baton of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The work begins quiet and slowly leads to the climax with the two major themes, Russian and Asia being played simultaneously, ending with fragments of the themes fading away in the distance as the caravan disappears. In 1873, Bizet arranged five movements from his 1871 suite for piano duet for a new series of orchestral concerts organized by the publisher Georges Hartmann and the conductor Edouard Colonne at the Odeon Theatre in Paris. The premiere took place there on March 2nd of that year and the "Petite suite d'orchestre" entered the repertoire soon afterwards. This newly engraved score has been carefully edited by Richard Sargeant from the first edition and other primary sources. Printed in a very convenient, highly readable format, the new edition will be welcomed by orchestral musicians and Bizet fans worldwide.

Composed in 1913 to a scenario for a Children's Ballet by André Hallé, the music existed only in a piano score and 93 measures of orchestration upon Debussy's death in 1918. His former student and faithful interpreter Andre Caplet completed the orchestration the next year for the long delayed performance at Paris' Theatre-Lyrique de Vaudeville on December 10, 1919. Berlioz composed his tremendous "Legende dramatique" in 1845-46, largely creating his own libretto after Gerard de Nerval's French translation of the famous Faust story by Goethe. The composer produced the dramatic oratorio at his own expense for the premiere on December 6, 1846 at Paris' Opera-Comique. Despite critical acclaim, the performance was not well-attended - a major financial setback for the composer. This new study score is a digitally-enhanced reprint of the score issued in 1907 by Breitkopf & Hartel as part of the projected Berlioz Complete Works, edited by Charles Malherbe and Felix Weingartner.

Brahms composed his first volume of choral-watzes in August of 1869 to poetry taken from Polydora, an 1855 collection of German folk-poems and love-songs assembled by George Friedrich Daumer (1800-1875). Rather than the usual accompaniment for piano solo, Brahms elected to provide one for piano duet. The first performance was given in Heidelberg on November 4, 1869. The conductor Ernst Rudorff persuaded Brahms to orchestrate the accompaniment for 8 of the 18 selections (plus another subsequently included in his Op.65 set) for a concert given at Berlin's Hochschule on March 19, 1870. Offered here is a new edition and orchestration by Richard W. Sargeant Jr. The composer's own orchestration is retained for the eight selections prepared for the 1870 concert, while the remaining ten have been orchestrated by Sargeant with the same forces used by the composer.

In the wake of the positive reception of Brahms's first set of Liebeslieder-Walzer after their 1869 premiere, German conductor Ernst Rudorff persuaded the composer to orchestrate the accompaniment for eight of the eighteen Op.52 selections - plus another piece subsequently included in the Op.65 set - for a concert given at Berlin's Hochschule on March 19, 1870. Bach composed the first version of this piece in 1723 using the key of E-flat major for the Christmas Vespers in Leipzig which contained several Christmas texts. Over the years he removed the Christmas-specific texts to make it suitable for year-round performance, and transposed it to D major, providing better sonority for the three trumpets, which is the standard version of the work encountered today. The Magnificat is divided into twelve parts which can be grouped into three movements, each beginning with an aria and completed by the choir. The four movements from the original version have been transposed to D major and inserted in their original order for those wishing to have the omitted Christmas texts.
