Hardcover with beveled boards, full rust cloth binding with blindstamped decorative frame and gilt lettering and decoration to front cover and spine, rear cover blindstamped with front design, 9-1/8" tall, 368 pp. Very light wear and bumping to edges, gift inscription dated 1872, a 1955 newspaper article and cartoon about Frances Fuller Victor affixed to rear endpapers. There are several plants pressed between the pages with minimal ghosting, a few scattered words underlined or margin lines.

Red leather spine over marbled paper-covered boards, gilt lettering and rules to spine, edges untrimmed, 9" tall, 186 pp, 120 pp, 220 pp. Rubbing to joints and covers, minor foxing and discoloration, but generally quite clean and solid. The first volume of this work edited by America's seminal novelist, and includes his Annals of Europe and America. This volume is of particular important to the Pacific Northwest with three early references to the Lewis & Clark [Clarke] expedition: p. 183 in the Review of Literature, p. 82 in American State Papers, and p. 198 in Poetry. This last is "On the Discoveries of Captain Lewis" by Joel Barlow, the highly regarded poet who helped Paine publish "Age of Reason" while he (Paine) was in jail.

Full green cloth with gilt lettering & rules to spine, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, 9-1/2" tall, 360 pp., folding map frontis, plate illustrations including one other map. Stain and paper pull to front endpapers, possibly removal of bookplate, else near fine. A handsome copy of an important work which I personally found to be more readable than comparable works.

Signed edition of this in depth history of an important moment in Nez Perce history.

Navy cloth covered boards are bumped at bottom corners. Bump to head of spine. Unmarked pages are clean and crisp. Binding straight and tight. Price clipped paper dust jacket overlaid by clear & yellow acetate jacket with a price of 6.50. Paper jacket with edge wear and chipping at edges and very short closed tear at top rear spine hinge. Acetate jacket is rubbed with two tears: closed tear at bottom front edge near spine and tear at top rear spine corner with tiny chip out. Both jackets now encased in protective mylar cover. One of twenty-five hundred copies signed by the author of which this is number A85. In addition to author's signature on limited edition page, also signed by the author and inscribed to prev owner in front free end paper. Special Lewis and Clark edition commemorating the 50th volume in the Rivers of America Series.

Dust jacket rubbed and edge worn with mild curling at edges. Short closed tear to top rear edge. 112 pages. Profusely illustrated with color reproductions of postcard images of Washington state.

Two volumes, hardcovers, full green cloth with blindstamped ruled borders and publishers device to front and rear covers, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, 6-1/4" tall, 371 + 395 pp., folding map as frontispiece to volume one. Bump to top front corner of vol.1, minor turning in to bottom corners, slight wear to spine ends, ownership inscription to each volume, very clean, solid, and present well. "M'Vickar's edition is a selection of passages reproduced verbatim, with linking commentary by the editor." Coues states that most editions of this text consisted of 250 copies (Beckham et al,"Literature of the L & C Exp." p. 181) The closest date to the 1895 inscription is 1891.

Forest green cloth with gilt titles on spine, 4to, 1,016 pages, full of black and white photographs, green marbled endpapers and text block edges, inscribed, "To Miss Barbara Elliott/ with sincere regards/ Charles Henry Carey" on title page; in excellent condition, pages are clean, binding is tight. Barbara Elliot Davis is the namesake of the Oregon Historical Society Davies Family Research Library.

Near fine externally with minimal wear to extremities, bookplate removal to each volume, front hinge of vol. 2 repaired with japanese paper. A handsome set of one of the most important documents of the growth of America.

Binding sound. 349 pages. 22 black and white plates. Whitman was a prominent physician and missionary in Oregon and Washington, and Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington is his namesake.

Some fading to covers, old catalog description pasted to rear endpaper, which reads: "The first edition of this account of the invasion of Wyoming by the hired assassins of the cattle barons and of the cold blooded murder of peaceful settlers was rigidly suppressed by the families exposed in it; it names and accuses as murderers the Governor of Wyoming and many of the most prominent cattle owners around Casper and Cheyenne.
