Very good. 492, 700 pages. 24.5 x 19 cm, First modern edition, and first reprint since 1580, and the best edition of this important source book for Shakespeare (amongst others), printed from the early editions. These early tragedies herein adumbrate a large portion of the Elizabethan drama. Haslewood has added some biographical notes, including collations of all the early editions, and notes on the variations of the text. Painter, clerk of Queen Elizabeth's Ordinance compiled the collection of stories, and like others amassed a personal fortune through embezzlement, endemic in the Elizabethan civil service. An austerely, wide margined but finely printed work. Book labels, very clean and fresh internally, slight toning first few endpapers Vol.I, modest extremity rubbing, tight binding, raised bands gilt decorated.

Eva La Gallienne's copy with her bookplate front paste-down. Inscribed presentation copy from Harold Moulton, a member of the Civic Repertory Company, dated Oct. 6, 1930. Eva La Gallienne founded the Civic Repertory Theatre in the former Fourteenth Street Theatre in Manhattan, being disillusioned by the commercial theatre in the 1920's. One of her lovers, Alice DeLamar, a gold mine heiress not only backed this project, but was instrumental in the advent of the repertory movement in the US. La Galleinne's successful performance in Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" in 1928 won great acclaim. The Civic Repertory Company disbanded at the height of the the Depression in 1934. BAL 5025. Illustrated with 25 full-page etchings (including text leaves and the title-page) printed recto only. The gossamer quality of his etchings stood in contrast to the thickly painted surfaces and generally somber color of his oil paintings, which reflected his admiration for Courbet and Cézanne. Segonzac's work is held in the permanent collections of several museums worldwide, including the British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The play staged Théâtre Grand Guignol, March 3, 1923.
