Stories written between 1876-1877 when Hearn was a reporter on the staff of Murat Halstead's Cincinnati Commercial. Hearn had no definite assignment at the "Commercial," where he covered boxing matches, also reporting on Negro life, crime and poverty, but this did not deter him from seeking out the more bizarre stories presented here.
