During World War II, American sailors in the Atlantic are trying to get their oil tanker to allied Russians, but they are sunk by a German U-boat. After being rescued, they try once again to make it to the Russians, while dodging more U-boats and aerial bombs. Set in the Atlantic Ocean, shot on location in Santa Barbara, California. 10 x 8 inches. Very Good, with one tear at the middle left edge of the photograph and some wear to the finish and creasing. Also with paint residue at the middle bottom edge of the photograph.

Vintage borderless photograph from an anti-fascist meeting in Paris in 1936, featuring novelist Andre Malraux speaking on a microphone with Nobel Prize winner Andre Gide seated at a table next to him. Photographer's rubber stamp to the verso, accompanied by manuscript annotations in pencil, black ink, and red felt ink. Likely a photograph from a meeting of the Popular Front, a French alliance of various left-wing movements including communists and socialists during the interwar period. Andre Malraux was a widely-noted novelist and anti-fascist, who joined the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War on behalf of France. He later became Charles de Gaulle's Minister for Information, and later his Minister of Cultural Affairs, and would be remembered for his challenging viewpoints about the role of art in society. United States involvement in World War II created the perfect storm for a staggering increase in the number of "all-girl" big bands in the early 1940s. As male musicians were frequently getting drafted, and those left behind on the home front sought musical entertainment as a means of coping, hundreds of of female dance bands sprang up to fill the need. Woefully their memory has largely been lost to history, alongside many other women who took other jobs that were traditionally considered "men's work." 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Included in the archive are leaves from a photo album with over 100 photographs of Palmer's friends and family members, a photograph of the St. James Street Post Office dated 1929 and mounted on stiff brown board, two leatherbound albums containing 101 vernacular photographs of Europe during the last few months of World War II, a typed letter signed from actor Bernard Miles to Palmer's wife Molly, a manuscript letter from writer Alex Waugh to Palmer, a brief typed letter to Palmer from a columnist at "The Cinema Gazette," a manuscript letter from Palmer to his mother written on Adolf Hitler's personal letterhead, and a typed letter from a BBC executive returning a brief typescript about the war submitted for consideration by Palmer. N.p.: N.p., 1938. Archive of 64 vintage photographs, including 53 matte-finish and eleven glossies, documenting reconstruction of the Panama Canal's Dock 15 in Balboa. Most photographs with technical captions and dates from the negative on the rectos. Additionally included with the photographs is a collection of four booklets, dated between 1919 and 1943, discussing various aspects of the canal's construction and improvements during that time, as well as an original shipping envelope addressed from the Panama Canal Metal Trades Council. With Europe on the verge of war in the early 1930s, the US government became increasingly concerned about its ability to move naval warships between oceans. The canal locks would be susceptible to bombing in the event of war, the canal defenses were deemed inadequate, and the locks already had difficulty accommodating large US battleships. The last film in the "war" trilogy that began Polish director Wajda's career as a director, preceded by "Pokolenie" (1955) and "Kanal" (1957). A strong anti-war statement, framed in the personae of two men given orders - from the part of the resistance that opposes the new Communist regime, and on the last day of World War II in Poland - to murder a leading communist. One of Wajda's favorite performers and a friend, Zbigniew Cybulski, plays the man who eventually pulls the trigger and kills the communist leader, with unexpected results. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.
