Description:
Hollywood: Paramount Pictures. Final Draft script for the 1955 film. Actor Van Heflin's copy, with his name on the front wrapper and his manuscript annotations throughout. Based on the novel "Jovanka e le altre" by Urgo Pirro. Once branded himself by the House Un-American Activities Committee, award-winning director Martin Ritt focuses on the cruel branding of five women in this wartime drama. Some of his better-known films (The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, Norma Rae) also deal with the question of social and ethical choices in the face of pressure. In this story, the savagery of the Yugoslav partisans as they fight off Nazi occupation forces is also vented on five women accused of Nazi sympathies because of their sexual association with one German officer. The women (played by Silvana Mangano, Vera Miles, Barbara Bel Geddes, Jeanne Moreau, and Carla Gravina) have their heads shaved in order to brand them as traitors. (Eleanor Mannikka, AllMovie) Filmed on location in Italy and Austria. Orange… Read More

Paris: N.p., 1936. Vintage borderless photograph from an anti-fascist meeting in Paris in 1936, featuring novelist Andre Malraux speaking on a microphone with Nobel Prize winner Andre Gide seated at a table next to him. Photographer's rubber stamp to the verso, accompanied by manuscript annotations in pencil, black ink, and red felt ink. Likely a photograph from a meeting of the Popular Front, a French alliance of various left-wing movements including communists and socialists during the interwar period. Andre Malraux was a widely-noted novelist and anti-fascist, who joined the Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War on behalf of France. He later became Charles de Gaulle's Minister for Information, and later his Minister of Cultural Affairs, and would be remembered for his challenging viewpoints about the role of art in society. Andre Gide, as well, was a well known French novelist and staunch supporter of Communist Russia, until a trip to that country around the time of this photograph… Read More

Most photographs with technical captions and dates from the negative on the rectos. Additionally included with the photographs is a collection of four booklets, dated between 1919 and 1943, discussing various aspects of the canal's construction and improvements during that time, as well as an original shipping envelope addressed from the Panama Canal Metal Trades Council. With Europe on the verge of war in the early 1930s, the US government became increasingly concerned about its ability to move naval warships between oceans. The canal locks would be susceptible to bombing in the event of war, the canal defenses were deemed inadequate, and the locks already had difficulty accommodating large US battleships. As a result, Congress passed a resolution on May 1, 1936, authorizing a study of (and subsequent improvements to) the canal's… Read More
