N.p.: John Margolies, 1991. Archive of ten vintage oversize photographs of drive-in theaters across America, taken variously between 1977 and 1982. Three photographs struck in 1981 and seven photographs struck in 1991. All photographs signed by the photographer on the verso, identifying name, date, and location. States represented in the archive are Texas, Virginia, Ohio, California, Washington, and Michigan. Architectural critic, photographer, and author John Margolies is best known for his photographs of vernacular and novelty architecture, most notably roadside attractions built during America's automobile culture of the 1950s, taken between 1969 and 2008. Approximately 400 of the photographs appear in his 2010 monograph, "John Margolies: Roadside America," and in 2016 the Library of Congress created the public domain, "John Margolies Roadside America Photograph Archive," consisting of 11,710 color slides of his photographs. The photographs show Kinski with his family, the images generally painting a picture of Kinski as a loving husband and doting father, and an altogether happy family, images in stark contrast to both Kinski's already well deserved reputation for violent and erratic behavior and the truth of his family's domestic life. All of the photographs are from an edition of 20 and are numbered on the verso, with all twelve color photographs numbered "1/20," and the black and white photograph numbered "2/20." Born in Freiburg, Germany, Michael Montfort began his career working as a photojournalist for German magazines such as "Stern," "Quick," and "Bild am Sonntag." In addition to shooting numerous rock and jazz performances, he covered Queen Elizabeth's 1965 visit to Germany, the aftermath of the Six Day War in Israel and Egypt, and the May 1968 protests in Paris. Original two sided poster for an exhibition held at the Centre Cultural Americain in Paris from December 7, 1978 through January 13, 1979 by noted film still photographer Bob Willoughby. INSCRIBED by him on the front to his neighbors: "Deirdre [and] Michael / with all good wishes / Bob Willoughby." Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, photographer Robert Willoughby began working for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. He spent the next 20-plus years as a set photographer for every major studio and magazine, with his images seen in print literally every week of his career. Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 16 x 23.25 inches.
