Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1970. Archive of 32 vintage photographs documenting the October 20, 1970 collision of two trains along the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad line in Raytown, Missouri. Also included in the archive is a single broadside reward poster offering $5000 for information pertaining to the accident. According to a contemporary newspaper article which appeared in nearby Jackson County's Independence Examiner, the accident was believed to have been caused by juvenile vandalism to a nearby track switch. The collision and subsequent derailment resulted in the death of one engineer, whose partial body is visible in several photographs. The photographs in the archive range from close-up shots of the mangled train cars and tracks to distance views of the surrounding woods. Frequently displayed in the images is a small, handwritten police chalkboard noting the date, location, and case numbers. A vivid and interesting look at investigative photography and railway disasters in the late… Read More

Description:
N.p.: Edison Manufacturing, 1902. Vintage broadside advertising a motion picture show held at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Caughdenoy, New York, circa 1902. Thomas Edison patented the Kinetograph (a motion picture camera) and the Kinetoscope (a single-user, peep hole film viewer) in 1897. The latter would eventually give way to projection devices that would allow larger audiences to view films. The Edison Manufacturing Co. (later known as Thomas A. Edison, Inc.) not only built the apparatus for filming and projecting motion pictures, but also produced films for public consumption. Most early examples were "actuality films," short motion pictures showing famous people, news events, disasters, new modes of travel and technology, and expositions, as the broadside on offer attests. As audience enthusiasm for "actualities" faded, the company's production emphasis shifted to fictional films, mostly comedies and dramas, by 1903. 5.5 x 14.5 inches. Very Good plus, with faint foxing at the bottom… Read More

Description:
London: The Royal Princess' Theatre, 1852. Vintage broadside for a series of performances at the Royal Princess's Theatre, Saturday, December 11, 1852, including Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night, or What You Will," Samuel Birch's 1825 musical drama "The Adopted Child," and John Poole's 1833 play "Deaf as a Post: A Farce, in One Act," two of which are noted as the first of four farewell performances by British stage comedian and actor George Bartley. With a manuscript ink annotation of a gift inscription on the bottom right. Named for Princess Victoria before her accession as queen, the Royal Princess's Theatre opened in 1836 on Oxford Street in London on the previous location of the "Queen's Bazaar," a gallery which opened in 1828 and housed paintings and a moving diorama by the celebrated British painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield and David Roberts. The theatre was most celebrated for its renowned productions of Shakespearean revivals under the management of the noted actor Charles John Kean… Read More

Description:
Pompton Lakes, NJ: Chivers Motor Company, 1934. Original flyer for a remote radio-controlled Ford Motors automobile event sponsored in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey on August 16, 1934. The event was sponsored by the Chivers Motor Company, featuring three Ford cars operated from a distance on the grounds of a local high school. "Magic car" or "phantom auto" shows became popular in the 1930s and 1940s, and were often used to promote car companies or demonstrate road safety. Radio engineers would follow behind the car in a second vehicle (or in some cases, in a low-flying airplane) and control the brakes, steering wheel, and horn using a morse key and spherical antennae attached to the car. 9 x 12 inches. Mimeograph duplication. Very Good plus, with short closed tears to the left and right edges.
